A man wearing all gray had gone into a building that was in the middle of the forest. From afar, it looked like an old storage unit that had been left to rot and be forgotten. When he walked through the rooms full of plants and broken glass, he was met with a keypad that looked like it had been used for ages. He entered a code, and then it opened. A large metal door that was in the center of the building was opened and steam was released from the door being sealed shut.
He walked inside, and the door shut behind him automatically. He walked down the stairs as the lights shined directly onto him from above. The cords that strung from them had hit him along the way and had danced as he passed by. When he got to the last step, he looked behind him to make sure he was not followed.
When he was sure that he was alone, he continued walking down the hallway. The sounds of moans and screams were just the ambiance as he walked along to his destination. As he walked more, the screams grew closer. When he got to the end of the hallway, the screams became clear enough to distinguish that they were coming from the other side of the hallway. He entered a room and turned on the light, waiting for the right time to speak into the microphone. He sat there and stared at the man that was just sitting there, spacing out and hitting his head on the table.
"How are you today, Mr. Clyde?" The man in the gray said to him.
"Fuck. Off." Clyde said as he put his feet up onto the table. He put his hands behind his back and looked directly into the mirror. The two-way glass was huge, so huge that the man in gray could see everything in the room.
"Well, as it turns out we will no longer be needing you. My associates will be there to put you down like the dirty animal you are." The man said, laughing maniacally.
Clyde got up out of his seat when he realized two grown men coming his way. They were in surgery uniforms and had masks on. "No, please! I'll do anything you say! Please, I need to see her!" He screamed. It was too late. The men had grabbed him and dragged him out by his wrists. In the distance, all the man in gray could hear were mangled screams as he was stabbed to death, and thrown to the side.
The question was burned into my mind. "Why did you hold my hand?". When someone asks you why you did a thing that you yourself don't even know why you did, it's hard to answer. I really don't know why I kept my hand there for that long. Well, at least I don't know why I didn't pull him in close for a hug sooner. Usually, it wouldn't bother me. I'd forget all about it the next morning and go about my day as normal. Though, Daniel kept his eyes on me waiting for a response that I didn't think I could give.
"I don't know why," is all I had to say. I wanted to say more. I really wanted to stop the car right then and there and grab his face, look him in the eye, and say that I did it because it felt right. Even though I could've, I didn't. I kept my peace about it and it visibly upset him. He was already mad at me before, I doubt that my response made him feel any better.
He looks forward to the building for a bit as I parked. I put the car in park and took the keys out, letting it turn all the way off. The lights inside turned on as the ones outside turned off. He sat there and stared at the wall for a good minute before blinking. I opened my mouth, unsure of what to say. I quickly closed it as I see Daniel's head turn towards me. His eyes turn downwards, as if he's wanting to say something but can't quite get the right words out.
He says something after sitting in the car, being silent. "I don't want to be on my own tonight," he said. My eyes widen at his statement. "What?" I ask him. Is he wanting me to stay over? "You said that we weren't safe in the woods. Especially since I was alone. Well, I don't want to be alone tonight; I don't feel safe." He rubs his arm up and down as he waits for my response on the request.
