Chapter 1: The new City

My alarm went off and I groaned internally as I knew what that meant, it was the last day in my small hometown, the day before I would abandon everyone I knew and be dragged to New York. The average person would be so excited to go, but for me, that meant leaving our cozy town house where I grew up in, where I created my most precious memories, but most importantly, where I said goodbye to my mom.

When I was 12, my mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and no matter how hard she fought against it, the cancer won.

I was brought out of my trip down depression avenue when the heavenly scent of pancakes hit my nose and I involuntarily started drooling. It was then when I became aware of my stomach begging for food. So, I pulled my comforter off my body and I shivered as the cold air hit my bare legs. Well, now I'm definitely awake. Ugh. O wait, PANCAKES! Before I could finish the sentence in my head, I somehow managed to reach the kitchen. That's when I saw my dad washing the dishes, but I was immediately distracted by the tower of pancakes right in front of me. "Good morning to you too" dad said-chuckled and heat crept up my neck. He gave me his signature good-morning smile and then finished the dishes. Now, my dad is fairly good-looking for his age and every so often a new friend I made and brought to my house for the first time told me that, flirting and down right crushing on him, and talking to me about it. Gross. But, even though women often threw themselves at him, he never gave them a second glance, because even after five years he was still loyal to my mom."Good morning dad" I said shyly. But I quickly forgot about my bad manners and started digging into the heavenly pillows drenched in maple syrup. A moan escaped my mouth as I took the first bite. " So, your last day in Willowsberg... how are you planning on spending it?" dad asked, an apologetic tone in his voice. My oh-so-happy mood changed as quickly as I ran down the stairs a few minutes ago. "Do we have to leave dad? I mean, I know its your work and all, but can't they make an exception? All my friends are here and I really don't want to finish my last year of high school in another school." I begged, my voice dripping with desperation. My dad took some steps toward me until we were inches away, and he bent down and gave me one of his famous bear-hugs. "Sweetie, you know better than anyone that I can't." He was right. I knew that he had no other choice. It was worth a shot though. So I just nodded a yes and he did the same, sat across from me and he himself started attacking the tower of deliciousness in front of us. And so, my last day at Willowsberg began...
