She was always running to class and today was no exception. Somehow she had slept through the rising bell, had barely thrown on her uniform and combed down her long black hair before her Dorm supervisor kicked her out of the Dorm. She had managed to grab a protein bar for breakfast at the cafeteria before rushing to her first class. The hallways were already empty and the voices of teachers beginning their lessons with students rang in her ears. She was so late.
A few steps to her class she caught sight of a group girls huddled and giggling over something in a corner. She thought nothing of it and was about leaving when she heard a faint whimper. Looking closely she could see that they all wore the prescribed pair of black shoes but only one pair was spotting big red bows. And she only knew of one person who would wear such shoes, and she wasn't friends with any of the girls Becca was looking at. She dropped her bag on the ground and plodded to the group. "Is there a problem?"
The girls turned to look at her and Becca could see Miley sitting on the floor, her head buried in her arms and her curly brown hair in a mess.
"Who did this?"
No one spoke up, all of them sneering as they stared her down. Becca, undeterred, put her hands on her waist and stepped forward. "It's okay if you don't want to talk, but I bet Principal Knox would have it much easier than me, especially when she finds out exactly what you guys were doing during class hours." That earned her a reaction, and after a final glance at Miley they stormed away but not before Denise, the instigator, gave Becca a final warning. "This is not over yet. I'll deal with you later. Trust me." To which Becca shrugged, unconcerned.
Then Becca knelt beside Miley. "Are you okay?" Slowly, she raised her head up and Becca saw that her face was laced with tears. "Get up." She said and held her hands to help her stand. Then she helped clear up her face and tidy her hair. "Why do you allow those suckers to treat you like that, aren't you all in the same class?"
"It's nothing new, it's only become worse since I was chosen as a contestant for Ms. Delta."
"Don't mind them, those idiots are just jealous. You were chosen, not them. You've got to make them respect you because of that."
"Why are you helping me out when we're rivals?" Miley asked, peering into Becca's face.
"Come on, just because we're in competition doesn't mean that I can't help you. Besides this has nothing to do with the contest. I can just go back to clawing your hair out later." That elicited a smile from Miley.
"I've got to go. Thanks for today." She said and walked away.
Suddenly Becca remembered that she was late for her class and rushed to where she had left her bag, snatching it up. Stopping at the door to her class she made a mental note to do better next time before slowly opening the door and entering.
