I dedicate this chapter to karinberry for her support through a comment on my story. I said it before and I'll say it again, I really appreciate the time you took to read the this.
Faulty desks, old science equipment which had long lost their usefulness, old and worn out textbooks, you name it. They were all in the abandoned science lab, on the floors and in the big shelves covered with ages of dust that stung Becca's eyes and nose as she crouched behind one of the shelves in wait. No one had really been there in years and the place was dark and musty. She checked her watch, 11:56PM . A few more minutes and she'll come face-to-face with the thief who was going to help her win the crown.
Something with a tail scurried past her and she quickly covered her mouth to keep from screaming. Becca couldn't wait to leave; where the hell was she? As if on cue, a ray of white light shone beside her, accompanied by silent footsteps. The light went left and right and with it came a low whisper. "Hello?"
Becca kept still for some reason and decided to stay that way for a while.
The whisper came again, louder this time and it sounded like it was right in front of Becca, the light shining just around where she hid. "Hanna, I saw you leave the Dorm, where are you?"
Becca took a deep breath and finally got up and came out of her hiding place. "I don't think Hanna's coming." Her eyes widened when she saw who stood in front of her. "You were the thi—"
"You're not Hanna." The girl interrupted, her confusion apparent.
Hanna was at the moment quite far from the abandoned science lab, hiding for her dear life, on the verge of being caught. She had successfully sneaked out of bed without waking Victoria which hadn't been that difficult since the girl had covered her entire body with her blanket and not even an earthquake was going to wake her up.
Everything had been going okay up until she reached one of the classroom blocks, where she would have to pass through before she got to the lab that was a bit far from campus. Instead she had to duck into the bushes around before the flashlight of the night security guard on duty found her. And it looked like he was going to stay for a while as he leaned on a tree trunk very close to where Hanna hid and lit a cigarette. It was either getting caught or staying still so she could in the end meet the thief. Hanna sighed, it was going to be a long wait.
Meanwhile Becca was trying to wrap her head around the situation. She folded her arms. "I never would have imagined this. I never knew you had it in you. This is so unreal." She noticed the designer shopping bag in the other girl's hand. "You weren't kidding about the shoes either. I guess being rich has its perks."
The girl quickly hid the bag behind her, as if that would help. "You're not answering my question." She hissed, her jaw clenched. "Where in the world is Hanna? She is supposed to be here; I saw her leave the Dorm myself."
"I don't really care where Hanna is at the moment, all I care about is reporting you to the authorities."
"You wouldn't dare." The girl warned.
"It's your word against mine. And I'm pretty sure that a sweep of your room is going to reveal those tickets, more evidence to put you on suspension, or even worse dismissal. Think about that." She clasped her hands and gave the girl a satisfied smile.
"Becca —"
"Hanna's going to be so surprised when she finds out the truth. She'll have a hard time believing it. And don't try using those heels as a bribe for any of us, especially not Hanna; I doubt she will receive them willingly. And I prefer kicks to heels, heels vex me; not that I would take them even if you brought them."
"Becca, please." She said, her voice a little pleading.
Becca stepped forward until they stood inches from each other. "My advice to you is that you should go back, have a good night sleep and prepare for a meeting with Principal Knox tomorrow morning." She smirked. "I guess my work here is done." Then she shouldered the girl aside and walked through the junk, heading to the entrance, using her little torch as a guide.
After only a few steps she heard a heavy drawing sound behind her and spun around to see one of the big shelves falling towards her. For what was probably the first time in a long time Becca's heart raced for something that was not sports; her heartbeat accelerated and her brain sent a plethora of warning signals but her limps were frozen from the fear that had infiltrated her veins and her torch fell from her hand, the light bobbing around as the it hit the ground and rolled away. She opened her mouth but no sound came and the equipment, glass, ceramics, all of it began to fall on her and she put her hands up to protect herself.
Her eyes fell on the girl, who had determination written all over her features, her resolve to keep her deeds a secret forever even if it meant she had to silence Becca too. The last thing Becca saw was the ghost of a victorious smile on her face before the shelf finally hit her and she fell, her bones making a cracking sound as she connected with the ground, her body crushed under the weight of the large shelf. Blood seeped from beneath her unto the hardwood floor, staining it.
It was sometime later before the other girl emerged from the lab, still holding her shopping bag. She took the path to the Dorms and almost run into Hanna, a quick dash into the nearby bushes saving her. She watched as Hanna entered the lab then she quickly run back to her Dorm. A few meters to her Dorm doors, the girl heard Hanna's scream pierce through the night.
