First three classes over and Miley was back in the hallway. Becca's name was all over the place now, on everybody's lips; teachers, students, the janitors, kitchen staff and even security. Everywhere one went they heard Becca's name. People couldn't just get over the fact that she had died, and on school grounds too for that matter. Hanna's name also came up a number of times since she had been the one to find Becca's body. She was certainly being bombarded with a lot of questions from inquisitive classmates, and knowing Hanna she was probably milking the attention for all its worth.
Miley got to her locker and unlocked it. She paused for a moment as she remembered that it had just been yesterday Becca had saved her from her tormentors. Her mind wondered to that midnight and guilt washed all over her. If only, Miley thought, if only she had not... A loud noise from her side startled her and she jumped. They were back, her tormentors.
"Hello Xochi-chilli pepper." Their redhead leader, Denise, snickered, placing herself directly in front of Miley. They were of the same height but Denise always found a way to make Miley cower before her. She really found delight in harassing her.
"It's Xochipilli. And please leave me alone." Miley shut her eyes and mumbled, her voice barely audible.
Denise placed her ear near Miley's lips, her voice low and frightening. "Speak up, Xochi-chilli. I didn't hear you the first time."
Miley kept her eyes closed, as well as her lips.
"That's what I thought." Denise put her fingers into Miley's hair and messed it up, yanking on it. Her disciples behind her laughed and Miley could only stare at her feet while they made fun of her. "It seems your knight isn't here to save you today. She probably had a very hard time tackling a 600kg shelf and needs all the rest she can get," She paused, yanking on Miley's hair again and added with a burst of laughter, "in the morgue."
They all laughed at the joke even though Miley didn't find it funny at all.
Denise wiped the tears that had accompanied the laughter from her eyes. "I'm really busy at the moment so I can't play with you but I'll make sure to visit after school. Don't go off to where I won't be able to find you 'cause that'll make me very mad." She chuckled. "See you later, Xochi-chilli." She yanked one last time before she and her followers walked off, laughing hysterically.
Miley watched them leave, her face contorting with rage while she smoothed down her hair as best as she could, then turned back to her locker.
Kellan suddenly appeared beside her, unlocking the locker next to hers and Miley was quick to wipe the ugly expression off her face. "Funny them calling you Xochi-chilli, how ever that is pronounced."
"It's Xochipilli and it's my middle name, which I don't use. And funny you appearing at the exact time they left. Scared much?"
"Hey, hey, hey," Kellan put her hands up in mock surrender. "I'm not the one who bowed my head and allowed myself to be insulted by those ugly idiots, and especially by rude that redhead, whose nose is as red as her hair. You should really think about yourself before you speak."
"Thanks for the not needed counsel. That also goes for you, we both know that sometimes you don't say the brightest things."
"If you're referring to our meeting when I brought up the fact that Becca's death could've been an accident right when we were accusing each other, yes I agree that it wasn't the best thing to say at that time but you understand that I was desperate to not have you guys think me as a murderer."
"Yeah, desperate enough to include me in the suspect list."
"There's nothing wrong with that, if I was been accused, wrongly if I may add, then I might as well find someone else to accuse."
Miley rolled her eyes and ignored her, banging her locker shut in response.
Kellan looked at her warily. "Are you alright?"
Miley didn't respond and busied herself with going through her books. Kellan lost interest and shrugged, putting her books into her locker. She looked up for a while to see Hanna walking briskly towards them. She was scowling and there was this fury in the way she walked, as if she was a fuse waiting to explode with the least provocation. Miley also stopped to look at her as she walked in their direction and then went right past them in a flurry, without even a glance.
"What's gotten her panties in a twist?" Kellan commented.
"She found her room ransacked after the midnight assembly." Someone said. "That's why she screamed, because some insane person had messed up her entire room."
