1. Identify the film's director AND production designer (or art/visual designer).

Directed by George Miller, Production Designer: Colin Gibson

2. What is the focus of this film? Explain using at least 2 specific examples from the film.

Focus on plot. Which is the plot of people escaping. One major scene is when Furiosa drives of from the path where she was suppose to be taking. She wants to bring Immortan Joe's wives to a new place where they will be safe. Another is when Nux is in the fight trying to bring Furiosa and her vehicle back to where they live and Max is trying to escape. Max does end up escaping at the end but is shows him trying to figure out how to leave his capture.

3. Where is the film's story set? How important is the setting to the overall look of the film? Give at least 2 specific examples.

The film is set in a Post Apocalypse world out on old highways. The setting is important to the look because of the fact that everything in the film is old and rusted, as well as objects being repurposed and barely stitched together. All of the cars are welded together with what looks like rusty scrap metal, and all of their weapons are old and covered in repairs. Some of them don't even use weapons to attack other vehicles. The overall look of the film seemed to be diesel punk. When Furiosa is driving with the convoy and when you can see Immortan Joes followers driving in their cars you can see how all of the cars and equipment is full of scavenged parts. When the convoy with Furiosa driving the water tanker is going down the highway you can really see the ruined and desert plain everywhere, there you can see the need and importance of having a vehicle to be able to get around.

4. What important interrelationships exist between the setting and the characters OR between the setting and plot? (In other words, how does the setting relate directly to the characters or how does the setting relate directly to the plot?) Cite at least 2 specific examples from the film.

At the beginning of Nux's and Max's relationship, they did not get along well because Max was Nux's "blood body." Even though they had not gotten along well at the beginning but by the time of Nux's death they were working together. One reason they may have gotten along was in the scene where Immortan Joe was saying that Nux could come to Immortan Joe's "heaven" if he did what Immortan Joe wants his to do. Once Nux realized he was not a good guy he started to side with Max and Furiosa. Which in the end he risked his life to make sure the wives, Max and Furiosa escaped. Another scene that is near the ending where Max is trying to save Furiosa. It is obvious that they have bonded for the time that they have been together. He making sure that she had gotten a blood transfusion because of the fact that without some of Furiosa's help, he nor most of the wives would be alive.

5. Identify which of the four environmental factors play significant roles in this film: 1) Temporal factors, 2) Geographic factors 3) Social Structures and Economic factors, and 4) Customs, Moral Attitudes and Codes of Behavior. You must cite at least two specific examples from the film and relate them to whichever factor(s) you have chosen. Could this story have taken place in ANY environment? Why or why not?

Geographic because of the fact that they spent so much time in a desert like area. They spend a lot of time trying to conserve the resources they have. The scene when Furiosa finally came back and met up with the last of The Land of Many Mothers they were talking about how they could not live where they where living due to the living conditions. The land was dry and could not grow food as well as having no water any more. One of the earliest scenes where the people the Immortan Joe are wanting water, he gives it to them. Immortan Joe only allows the water to be on briefly. The way the people act shows how much the people desperately need water.

6. What details of costuming and makeup help the actors to be "in character?" Do these factors also play a role in creating a sense of time and place? Give two examples to support your answer.

Furious frequently had black, almost charcoal looking colour, around her eyes and on her forehead. It showed that she had an association with Immortan Joe. That is because when she is leaving from where she was living in Immortan Joe's town that she had it on there and all the War Boys had some of the same colour around their eyes as well. After a while of not being home they colour started wearing off showing that time is passing in a linear direction.

7. Identify the major conflict. Is this conflict internal or external? Mostly physical or psychological?

Internal conflict and seems to psychological. Max seems to be dealing with the past still. There almost flashback-like shot to a group of people he could not save from war, especially a young girl. He briefly takes the frustration out on Furiosa and the wives until he realizes that they could help him and since he could not help the others that he should help them.

8. Is the lighting of the film as a whole a) direct, harsh and hard; b) medium and balanced; or c) soft and diffused? Again, at least one specific example is required to support your response. You need to show, in your answer, that you understand the description of this type of lighting. (See Chapter 4, Figure 4.17 to see examples of these types of lighting. Note also that the color scheme (or B/W) does not determine lighting types necessarily.)

There was a lot of use of direct, harsh, and hard lighting. Over all there were not a ton of shadows across people's faces. It was like the bright desert sun hitting them in the face. Especially when they were outside of the vehicles. When they were outside, it typically meant that there was fighting and the fighting was "harsh." One scene in partially that uses harsh lighting is Immortan Joe's death scene. There was the use of little shadow on the people. It comes across as the director/cinematographer wanted people to see the action clear and the intensity of the action.

9. In which scenes were you aware that the director was employing visual techniques to comment on or interpret the action, forcing you to see the action in a special way? (To receive full credit you must describe two scenes in detail, describe the visual techniques used in each scene, and explain their effect on the audience's perception of the action and/or scene)

The director spent a lot of time with in the action of the high action scenes. He wanted us to see what is going on close. During the scene where Immortan Joe had died. Even though we did not completely see his death, but we did see how he had died which was Max grabbing his chain and having it get caught within a wheel. There was another scene after Furiosa had driven off the path to take the wives to a different and safer place. There was times where the cameras were above the action of Immortan Joe's people trying to get the wives from Furiosa. It show how many people the Immortan Joe wanted/needed to try and get what he wanted done. The camera above the action shows more of the outside perspective of the fighting as well as showing the mass violence/destruction that is going on in the fight.

10. Which method does the director use to draw attention to an object--(not a character)--of greatest significance? (Also note the scene and the object you refer to.)

The director draws a lot of attention to Furiosa's vehicle. There a ton of shot where the audience gets shots from above the vehicle, almost like a scanning of just one side of the vehicle. When Max is able to finally be able to finally escape from Nux and is trying to escape the chains. He goes the Furiosa's vehicle to have a wife to cut the chains off. There were a few shots with in that scene it was Max's point of view looking at the vehicle and wanting to take the vehicle to escape from Nux and Immortan Joe's
