Behind Everything...

Chapter 20

Before I could speak, someone bumped into me, making me a bit defensive. "Found you!". It was from Jasper. "What the hell Jazz?", irritatingly I asked him. "I was looking for you", he said with a puppy face which melts me.

"Hey, Peter, what's up?", suddenly Jasper barked at the counter. I looked at Jasper with wide eyes.

Jasper laughed at my reaction and said, "Okay let me introduce Peter to you. Peter this is my best friend Vicky and Vicky this is Peter. My friend!". Jasper cried with joy. I looked at him with a surprised face. Jasper never mentions me about this friend before. 

Peter gave a friendly smile and I have to admit that he has the most beautiful smile ever but still, it was annoying. He gave his hand for a handshake and said, "It's nice to meet Vikky". "It's Veronica for you", quickly I responded. "Ouch, I think your friend didn't like me", he said again with that annoying smile. "No, it's just I always call her this", Jasper said.

Jasper looked back at me but before he again melts me with his puppy face, I decided to leave the two of them alone. I don't know why but when I met Peter, I didn't like him at all although he has the perfect features.  I went over a table and sat quietly. I began to play with my food since I totally lost my appetite but I knew that it was gonna be a long day so I didn't want to waste the food so I started eating slowly. 

 I was so busy in my own thoughts that I didn't notice the book over a face sitting on the other side of the table. Awkwardly I tried to get up since I thought that person might mind me sitting with them without their permission. "I- I didn't saw you. I'm sorry", awkwardly I said. The person didn't remove the book from their face so I didn't want to make a fool of myself so I began to leave. "You can sit here, I don't mind at all", suddenly the person spoke. 

Hesitantly I moved back to my seat and hope for that person to reveal their face by removing that book. Finally, the person revealed her face and dramatically my french fries dropped from my hands which managed to make their way to my mouth. "Hey", she said as casual as if we are close. It was her. The blonde beauty.

I know I always have confusion or blank face which sometimes annoys me too. "What are you doing here", I finally asked her. "Exactly the thing you're doing now", simply she said. I checked around the cafeteria and surprisingly none were staring at us. I have to admit that this girl has some magic as I have never seen anyone dare to pick on her. Maybe it is because she is pretty smart and she can insult anyone without thinking twice and no one has the ability to figure out her insults meaning. 

"So which class are you having next", I'm really bad at making any conversation with anyone especially the small talks. "Mathematics", she smiled. Her smile speaks a lot about her. Anyone can figure it out that she likes maths a lot and also she is very confident about it. It's strange but it's kind of make me like her. I mean who doesn't like to have a smart friend and a carefree yet caring friend like Jasper.

Jasper seems like a careless and a carefree person but when it comes to his grandma, he knows his responsibilities well. Sometimes it's so easy to understand what he's up to but sometimes it's hard to read his mind. I don't know whether it's only me who can read his mind or he's that simple to understand. I looked back to where Jasper was busy with his new friend. Jasper has gone through a lot since he lost his parents. From that day onwards he got to know about how to keep his feelings to himself only. 

Sometimes it really amazes me that how can he be so mature whereas at the same time he becomes childish around me. Even though people make fun of him and used to pick on him and take advantage of him, I know he is doing all this just for his grandma and me. He knows quite well that I can't see him sad. He loves me and his grandma. 

*Finger Snaps*

"Lost again?", the blonde girl said who was sitting on the other side of the table. I quickly come back from my thoughts. "Huh?", I was embarrassed in front of her. How can I always manage to make myself embarrass so often? I thought. 

"I'm Rachael and aren't you Veronica Brown? The most mischievous and weirdest girl in the school?", She asked me excitedly. I sighed at her question, well that's how people know me. People judge me. "Yeah you're right, that's me. What about you?", I asked her the same question even though by the time I lost the interest in her.

"Sorry... I didn't mean to hurt you...", "Whatever you mean, it doesn't matter to me and by the way thanks for the compliment", she was cut off by me. Frankly, I was too irritated as I didn't like my only best friend getting so close to anyone else. I don't know why but I just don't like it and clearly my frustration is about to explode soon.

I was only about to continue with my food when my eyes went to the girl next to our table, sitting alone with her food in front of her. It seemed like she has no appetite yet she's forcing herself to eat something. Her face has become white as if she has no blood cells. She was lost in some kind of thoughts when suddenly Ethan came in front of her from nowhere. He quietly lifted up her drink and simply poured it on her. 

The whole cafeteria burst out laughing. Christina and her friends were only a few tables ahead from the quiet girl's table and they were all laughing at her, including that Mr Nerd. Sometimes it surprises me how these people can manage to bully people so easy when suddenly I noticed that the girl gave Ethan a very stern look. I was amazed to see all this. 

The girl was Katerina. I don't know her personally but what I heard about her is that she is a pretty nice and quiet girl. Teachers are quite fond of her as she is good in studies and rarely gets any detention. I don't know why but I felt like something isn't right with her. Her face was white and her eyes were blood red which made Ethan a bit nervous.

Her gestures were not normal as if someone else is controlling her.  Suddenly from nowhere, Peter came into their way and began, "Wooh, chill guys...", before he could finish Katerina left without uttering a single word. By the time, Ethan shifted his glare at Peter who was also left behind confused. "What's up to you man? who the hell are you?", Ethan was boiling by the time. Peter well maintained his temper. I must say that he's got something but still, there was something about him that bothered me.

I turned back to the blonde girl but she was gone. My eyes tried to search for her in the whole cafeteria but she was nowhere. Quickly I finished my meal and threw the plate in the trash bin and before going out of the cafe, my eyes met the blue ones.
