So I look in your direction
But you pay me no attention
And you know how much I need you
But you never even see me

Hey guys, sorry this update took so long, thanks to everyone who is still reading despite the infrequent updates xx

*Mordred's POV*

Mordred stripped off the last of his chainmail, taking in a deep breath and closing his eyes. The armour room was completely silent. The silence was a welcome change from the laughter of  the training field, it was as if everyone had already forgotten that Elyon was dead. Maybe they were just used to losing their friends.

The silence was also a startling reminder of what Mordred had lost. He and Elyon were often the last to leave the training field and would spend time together afterwards. Sometimes they would grab a drink at the tavern, roam the market together, or just sit around the armoury and laugh at the latest antics of the other knights.

Mordred drew in a sharp breath. Sometimes it felt as if the sword that killed his friend was lodged in his own chest.

"Mordred?" A soft voice called and Mordred spun around, clearing the emotion off his face and dropping into a clumsy bow when he saw Queen Guinevere in the doorway.

"M'lady, is there something you require?"

The Queen smiled but her eyes were filled with pain. "Can we talk Mordred? In my chambers perhaps?"

Mordred bowed again and together they left the armoury. The Queen was quiet, even once they were in her chambers she just sat and stared at the table.

Mordred stood with his hands behind his back and shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other. He suddenly felt like a child again, standing in front of the druid leader waiting to hear what he had done wrong this time.

Five minutes passed, and the Queen finally spoke.

"I do not know if you have heard of this yet, Arthur and I were on a ride this morning and we were attacked. Something startled the Kings horse and his saddle broke. Arthur believes it's an inside job, his stable hand. He has no reason to though, Mordred I do not believe he is responsible.... Merlin agrees with me."

She paused and Mordred frowned. He had heard something had happened but he did not know the details.  He certainly did not understand why the Queen wanted to discuss this with him.

"I am concerned this has something to do with Morgana." Gwen met his eyes, her expression unreadable. "This is the second attempt on his life recently, I can't lose him not after Elyon..."

"M'lady we will protect the King, every single knight would lay down their life for him. I promise we will keep him safe." Mordred said gently.

"Does that include yourself Mordred?" Gwen asked, looking down at her folded hands. "You were close to Morgana once, not too long ago."

Mordred was speechless. Was she accusing him of not being loyal to his King?

"I am loyal to King Arthur. Morgana was kind to me once, I thought perhaps the good in her heart could overcome the evil. I was wrong. I swear on my life I would never betray Camelot, especially for her."

Gwen nodded slowly. "I apologise, I did not mean to insult you or question your loyalty. I was simply wondering if you still had any lingering loyalty or affection perhaps towards her. Tell me Mordred, if asked would you kill Morgana? Could you?"
