"The future is bulletproof. The aftermath is secondary. It's time to do it now and do it loud. Killjoys, make some noise!" Dr. Death Defying's voice plays over my radio as I put my mask on. I grab my ray gun and head out of a diner I had been staying at. I hop on my motorcycle and drive off into the desert. My wavy black hair blew out of my face behind my shoulders.

I don't know where I'm going, but there's one thing I'm certain of, I'm never going back to Battery City. Too many memories. Too much corruption. I push the images of my dead partners in crime out of my head and focus on the road ahead of me. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't keep the memories away. Even though we didn't always get along, they were still my best friends. But now they're gone. Maybe I'm better suited out here alone in the desert. I don't know; I'm not sure of anything anymore.

My name is Auburn Angel. In Battery City I used to be Helena, but those days are long gone. I breathe in the dusty air and pull a red bandana over my mouth as I ride. Where was I going? Where is everyone? Was there anyone left fighting for the Killjoy cause? What if this was a trap set up by BLI?

All of a sudden, I hear shots fired behind me and a bullet grazes my left arm. I pull my ray gun out of the holster and turn around, shooting at the Draculoids following me. Shit. I think as I miss all three. I dodge bullets and turn around to shoot again, hitting one of the three on my tail. The back tire of my motorcycle pops and I try to keep control over the bike, but I reacted too late.

I crash onto the desert ground, and my vision goes hazy. When I refocus, my motorcycle was crushing my leg. I grunt as I try to push it off of me, but I wasn't fast enough. Two Draculoids throw it off of me, and I scream for help. One of them kicks my head and the other my cheek. I try to get up and run, but they both grab one of arms and force me to stand up. I struggle against their grip, but it was too strong. My left arm throbbed as I watched my blood drip onto the Draculoid's glove.

I kick the Draculoid on my right's leg and elbow him in the jaw. He lets me go as he falls, and I hit the one on my left's jaw with my free arm and knee them in the gut. Lefty recovered quicker than I thought he would, and I yelled for help again at the top of my lungs. When I turned around, he had his ray gun drawn. Time slowed down. I look down at the sandy ground and close my eyes. My arm burned from the dusty wind. I clutched the wound and winced in pain. It had been a good run. Everybody gets caught eventually, right? I refuse to look at my executioner in a small act of defiance. I will die with my mark on if I have to.

"You have two choices," a voice behind me says. "Surrender and live. Or die."

"What happens if I surrender?" I ask in a sarcastic tone, keeping my eyes on the ground. "You two take me to BLI and brainwash me?"

"Precisely," the voice behind me says. I clench my fists and purse my lips. Who do they think I am? I will never surrender.

"Tick tock," the Draculoid holding the gun to my head says impatiently. I take a deep breath and prepare for the bullet that doesn't come. I look up and see a figure in green holding up a ray gun aimed in my direction, and the Draculoid that had the gun to my head dropped to the ground. Crimson liquid poured quicklyout of his chest onto the desert ground. I take the opportunity to shoot the other Draculoid in the thigh and watch it fall to the ground. The figure in green aims his ray gun at the Draculoid's head and fires.

"Thanks," I gulp.

"No problem. Do you have a group? It's pretty dangerous out here when you're on your own," he says.

I flinch, pushing the memories away, "My, uh, group was captured and killed a while back.."

"Oh God, I'm so sorry.." He looks down.

"It's fine," I mutter.

"It's going to be dark soon. You should probably come back to my group with me. It's not safe to be out here at night. I'm sure they'd be fine with letting you stay."

I hesitated. I can't put myself through this again. They're going to get caught, just like my old group did.

I look into his eyes, and I get a feeling in my chest I've never felt before. My heart swelled and felt like it was going to burst. His expression was begging me to go, and I just couldn't resist. Maybe this time things would be different. I nod, and his eyes light up. "The name's Auburn Angel."

He grinned, "Fun Ghoul."
