We got to the new house around 3:40 PM. Dad parked the car in the driveway. I took my headphones off my head to look out the window to look at the house. I can't lie, the house was beautiful, it was white, much bigger than our old house. It reminded me of some of the houses you see in movies. You know the classic white garage with white wooden shutters and a white picket fence around the clean green grass. I'd thought it was unlikely to find it in Beverly Hills, but I guessed that was why my Mom and Dad fell in love with this house.
My Mom and Dad got out of the car, but I didn't move. I just kept on reading my book, trying to distract myself from falling in love with this house. Until my car door opened. It was Jacob.
"Hey, Allie." I looked up at him with the biggest smile on my face. "When did you get here?" I ask him.
"This morning, Mom and Dad needed someone here for the moving van coming." I nodded my head in understanding. "Are you going to come in to see the house?" Jacob asks me as he was looking up admiring the house.
I still didn't want to go, but I can't stay out here forever. "I promise you will love it. Just come and look inside." I took his hand as he helped me out of the car, then I linked his arm walking to the house.
Jacob and I were remarkably close growing up, he was my favorite person as a little girl. He knew me better than anyone, even my Mom and Dad. When my speech would be bad and no one could understand me, but my brother always could, he was like my other half. When Jacob went to his prom, he was gone for the whole weekend. Mom and Dad were so angry with him, they didn't know where he could have gone, the more time he was gone they were getting more worried about him. Jacob called my phone the night after his prom night, he told me he was ok and he should be home by Monday, he asked me not to tell my Mom and Dad, but I never did.
He never told me where he was or what he was doing. I was only eleven at the time, but he knew I would keep his secret. He came home the following Monday. He had a long talk with my Mom and Dad. I didn't hear what they were talking about because I was in my room, and they thought I was asleep, but I could hear shouting, Mom was crying and there were a lot of things they disagreed on. My Mom and Dad found out that morning, Jacob had been seeing a guy called Mark for the last two years. No one knew my brother was into guys. Jacob told my Mom and Dad that he ran away after prom night to Beverly Hills to get married.
It took my Dad a bit of time more than any of us to get used to Jacob being married to Mark.
The first time we met Mark at a family dinner, my Mom and I were in love with him. He fit into the family well, from that day Mark was at every family get-together. After Jacob and Mark's first wedding anniversary, they moved to Beverly Hills for good. Jacob was only nineteen at the time, so it was like he was leaving for college and he was already married. Mom and Dad loved Mark by then, so they were happy for them starting a new beginning. They have been married for 7 years now.
When I got to the front door of the house with Jacob, the door was already open for us.
"I will be ok to walk from here," I told him. "You sure?" he asks
I nodded my head and headed into the house. It's not that I need help all the time when I walk, I can walk on my own. I just look a little funny because my legs do their own thing. I can do it just not as well as everyone else. The house was so much bigger than our old house in Palm Springs, the living room and the kitchen were attached together. Next to the kitchen, it looks like the dining area with a big long window going around the table. As much as I didn't want to be here, this house was beautiful. "Honey, are you ready to see your room?" Dad asks me. I was about to go up the stairs when I heard the three of them laughing at me.
"What?"
I say looking at them confused. "Here come with me." Jacob took my hand and led me to the door beside the kitchen under the staircase. I opened the door, and it was my bedroom. I knew from my wheelchair already being in there. There was a white closet with mirrors on the front of it. On the other side of the wall, it also had a pink and grey, with a big white frame bed in the middle of the room. A desk with my laptop sat upon it, with a few colorful sticky notes, books, and photos, under a window. I've even noticed I had my very own en-suite. The last thing I saw on the wall was a bookcase with all my books already put away on the shelves. "This is new," I told Jacob, and he laughed at me.
"Everything in your room is new sis, but I knew you would love this, so I got it for you as a moving gift. It's from Mark and I," he told me as he wrapped his arms around me giving me a hug. "You're right, thank you, and tell Mark I said thank you too." "Well, what do you think?" Mom asks me as she walked into my room. "I'm going to help Dad bring in some of the boxes from the car," Jacob said after he kiss both Mom and I on the cheeks before heading out. "I like it," I say, but my voice was remarkably high pitched, like it wanted to give away I was lying through my teeth. It was nice but it was too girly for me.
I walked over to my bed and Mom followed me. She set beside me on my bed with her arms crossed her chest on my new bright pink bed. "Look Allie I know you're not happy about moving, but this could be a good new start for us." Mom took my hands into hers. "Just why couldn't we have waited for another year so I could graduate with my friends, what is the point?" I ask. I'd hated that I left all my friends, the last day we spent together was last week.
Our Moms took us all to meet up at Palm Canyon Drive, we spent at least 5 hours shopping with each other. Even though I never was the kind of shop till you drop kind of girl, but it was the best day ever. Hannah was the last one to leave me in the shopping parking lot. When we had our last hug, I didn't want to let my best friend go, my Mom even got sad saying goodbye to Hannah's Mom.
"Because your Dad got this job now and it's an amazing opportunity for him, this is his first job as a School principal. Allie, you will make new friends." I rolled my eyes. My Mom had no idea what kids are like these days.
"Want if I don't?"
She didn't reply. I let out a sigh looking over to my bedside table, there was a picture of my Grandparents and I at my eleventh birthday party before they both died.
My Grandma passed during the summer after my birthday. Five months later my Grandad passed, just before Christmas. I was so close to both of my Grandparents. They were the only people I've lost in my family; I was only eleven years old losing them both. At such a young age I was going through pain and heartbreak that I've never experienced before, while I was grieving for two people at the same time. After that, I knew I never wanted to lose someone that close to me again. I guess that has become my biggest fear in life, of having that heartbreak and pain come around again, and when it does you have absolutely no control over it.
"Mom I'm going to go home, Mark is on his way home, and we have somewhere we need to be," Jacob said coming back into my room. Mom walked over to Jacob giving him a hug goodbye.
"Allie, Mark, and I was wondering if you want to come over to the house next week before you start your new school. You haven't been to our house in a while." I think for a moment. "Will Mark be there?" Jacob laughed. "Yeah, he will be there." He knew how much I loved Mark, he was like my second brother, and I haven't seen him in a while. I smiled looking back over to Jacob. "Yeah, I would love to."
"'I'll walk you out honey." Mom said as she patted Jacob on the shoulder as she begins to follow him out of my room but stopped at the door.
"Just give it a chance Allie." My Mom said before walking out, shutting the door behind her. I looked around at my new room until my eyes landed on my laptop. I got off my bed, and put my hand on my desk to help me get to the chair in front of the desk. I opened my laptop to search for the new School where I'm going to be spending the next year. East Beverly High.
