The day before the Bonfire night, Rosie wanted to go shopping after school. She didn't ask any of the others to join her, but she did ask me in class earlier. I felt a happy rush going through me, as I was reminded of how much I loved going shopping with my friends back home, especially Hannah and our Mom's. At that moment I realized how much I'd missed Hannah; I've haven't had a minute to get in contact with her since we got here. I had to sadly pass at first to Rosie's offer about going Shopping, as I was in my wheelchair and I knew it didn't fit in her trunk, but I did want to go.
"Don't worry about it, I'll get my Dad to pick us up and I'll leave my car here for the weekend." Rosie started texting her Dad. "Are you sure?" I ask. I didn't want her or her Dad go out of their way just for me. I hated when people did that when they tell you their ok with something you did, but they're not.
"Of course," she replied with a smile. Rosie locks up her car as soon as she was done sending a text to her Dad. We waited for him for only a couple of minutes, while we waited Rosie filled me in on some more on tomorrow night, still trying to convince me to go. We soon saw Rosie's Dad's big black Jeep soon enough. The car looked really fancy; I'd supposed it would be. I had no idea what make or year the car was, but it sure looks like it was the best you could get, the man was a pilot along with his wife for god sake. As I watched Rosie greet her father that looks like he was only coming back from playing golf with some buddies. "Hello, you must be Allie. Rosie told her Mom and I about you." I took Rosie's Dad hand giving him a small smile while shaking his hand. "it's nice to meet you too sir."
Rosie helped me get into the back of the car while her Dad kindly put my wheelchair in his trunk. I was thankful my chair fitted in the car. Rosie's Dad got into the car just after Rosie and I put on our seat belts. "Alright ladies, we need to get a move on because I've got a plane to catch." I could see Rosie's reaction in the side mirror and how her smile faded away after she realized her Dad is leaving tonight again, and maybe her Mom too. Like always, she wouldn't know how long they would be gone. I wondered how Rosie must be feeling right now.
Rosie's Dad knew to take us to Rosie's favorite shopping mall. When we got there, we all agreed to meet up back in the parking in an hour, 2 at the most. Rosie's Dad went off on his own, while Rosie and I went to do shopping. We went in and out of shops looking for outfits for tomorrow night, well, Rosie was.
I still wasn't sure about going tomorrow night, I know there were two reasons why I shouldn't. (A), my parents would never let me go. (B), it wouldn't be my type of thing, I've never been to a party without a family member by my side, let alone a high school party with drinking, drugs, and some people may be fooling around with each other. I may have a disability and have never experienced them, but I've seen or heard about them in mostly my books or some movies.
After having a talk with Rosie last week about trying to make new friends, or maybe trying to be less afraid to do new things and stop letting my disability getting in the way of having a life. Yet, I was still on the fence about going. Apparently, the whole School was going. Rosie told me they did this Bonfire night every year when everyone has come back to school. They had been doing this for years, it's an ongoing East Beverly High tradition. It was the chance to let people find out what everyone was up to on their summer break, or maybe it was just an excuse for everyone to come together on the Beach to get drunk and high, but who knows? I asked Rosie why it was happening after almost 3 weeks into the school year, she told me the third week of School was when everybody was fully back in School, most of the students were still on their vacations in the first two weeks back.
I've never said this actually out loud, but the truth was, I wanted to experience that. Not the drinking or getting the high part, I just wanted to know what it was like to have fun, not have to worry about being in pain, taking my meds, people finding it hard to understand me sometimes, or asking people for help all the time. I want to be my own person.
