We barely have time to get into position before Cap emerges from an underpass, jogging towards a helicopter parked in the middle of the tarmac. Before he can get there, however, Tony fires something that I would guess to be some kind of electro-disabler onto the blades, effectively grounding it. Steve looks up, his pace slowing as Tony and Rhodey descend from above, Tony flipping his helmet back as he lands.
"Wow, it's so weird how you run into people at the airport. Don't you think that's weird?"
"Definitely weird," Rhodey replies.
"Hear me out, Tony," Steve says, the resignation clear in his voice. He doesn't want to fight, but he will. "That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this."
Before he can finish, however, T'Challa jumps out from his hiding place, vaulting the helicopter and landing on Steve's right. "Captain."
"Your highness."
"Anyway, Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in," Tony says. "That was 24 hours ago. Can you help a brother out?"
"You're after the wrong guy."
"Your judgement is askew, Cap," I say gently, coming out and standing on his left. "Your friend killed innocent people yesterday. It's my job to see that people like him get put behind bars."
"And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Sophie. I can't."
I breathe in. That's news to me, if not to the others. Surely our focus should be stopping five deadly assassins from being set loose rather than fighting our own?
Nat steps out from her hiding place, appearing behind Cap and forcing him to turn as she speaks. "Steve . . . you know what's about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?"
Cap turns back to Tony, not answering, so Tony sucks in a breath. "All right, I've run out of patience. Underoos!"
Peter flips in over Steve's head, shooting out some kind of webbing which grabs Cap's shield and binds his hands.
"Nice job, kid."
"Thanks. Well, I could've stuck the landing a little better." I smile a little as Peter starts to ramble. "It's just the new suit... Well, it's nothing, Mr. Stark. It's - it's perfect. Thank you."
"Yeah, we don't really need to start a conversation."
"Okay. Cap . . . Captain," Peter says, saluting. Cap looks back, amused. "Big fan, I'm Spider-Man."
"Yeah, well talk about it later. Just . . ."
"Hey, everyone."
". . . Good job."
"You've been busy," Cap says, turning to Tony.
"And you've been a complete idiot. Dragging in Clint. 'Rescuing' Wanda from a place she doesn't even want to leave, a safe place. I'm trying to keep . . . I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart." Throughout his speech, Tony's voice rises, the tension that has always been obvious between those two finally reaching a boil.
Steve, however, keeps his voice level. "You did that when you signed."
"Alright, We're done. You're gonna turn Barnes over, you're gonna come with us. NOW! Because it's us! Or a squad of J-SOC guys . . . with no compunction about being impolite." Steve looks away and Tony's voice lowers, almost begging him. "Come on."
As he looks back, it becomes apparent that Steve is listening to someone on comms. It was a play for time.
Cap lifts his hands and an arrow shoots through his bound wrists, tearing the webbing apart. "Alright, Lang."
"Hey, guys, something . . ." Peter starts, but before he can finish, somebody appears out of nowhere and flips Peter over and onto the ground, taking the shield back as he runs back across the runway.
"Whoa. What-what the hell was that?" Rhodey asks, expressing our joint confusion.
"I believe this is yours, Captain America," Lang says, passing Steve back his shield.
"Oh, great," Tony sighs. "Alright, there's two on the parking deck. One of them's Maximoff, I'm gonna grab her. Rhodey, you want to take Cap?"
"Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes."
"Barnes is mine!" T'Challa says, immediately sprinting off, but Cap knocks him down with a throw of his shield and the two struggle.
"I'll take Clint," I say, having located where the arrow that shot Cap's hands free came from and taking off in that direction.
