I barely move at all for the rest of the morning, the shock of effectively losing the Doctor still hitting me. It's not even worth imagining what would have happened if he hadn't been able to answer my text. The universe would have crumpled. What if the same thing happens again, and the Doctor isn't around to stop it? Sure, Rose and her version of the Doctor are still here, but they don't have a TARDIS that can close down gaps between the worlds. Their usefulness is limited by their resources. The end of the world may have already begun.
In an attempt to distract myself, I eventually force myself away from the window and into the bedroom to change. My eyes fall on the foot of the bed where the TARDIS has left behind a square impression in the carpet but I try and push it from my mind as I change into my gym gear. The world may be ending, but there are still battles to fight and I need to be ready. With no Civil War between the Avengers and no shapeshifting alien to fight off, I can get down to my original purpose of visiting New York.
