Tony rejoins us when we get to New York, and we drop Peter back to Queens before heading over to the New York Hospital where Rhodey is currently being treated.
"What's going to happen to Clint and the others?" I ask quietly on our way over, mainly to break the silence.
"They've been detained in a submarine prison somewhere in the North Atlantic. Ross hasn't said how long they're going to be in there for, but I can't imagine it's going to be much of a holiday."
"Seems a bit harsh," I say, raising my eyebrows, then look cautiously back at Tony. "Any word on Nat?"
"She's gone dark," he says, his jaw clenched. "You were there - did she put up any resistance at all?"
"None. She knew Steve wasn't going to stop, I suppose she just wanted to minimise casualties."
Tony lets out a humourless snort, and we spend the rest of the journey in silence.
Vision is already there when we arrive, sat outside and watching grave faced as Rhodey gets put through the CT scanner and Tony takes one of the doctors aside to get an update.
"Do you have the capacity to feel human emotion?" I ask Vision suddenly after a moment.
If he's surpised at my outburst, he doesn't show it, and he considers my question. "I can feel some emotions more strongly than others. The powerful ones like love and fear are clear to me, but the others, not so much."
"So it's possible that you could have become distracted back at the airport?"
"I must have done," he replies, thoughtfully and I nod.
Tony comes back and paces up to Vision, confronting him. "How did this happen?"
"I became distracted," Vision replies, giving me a small sideways glance.
"I didn't think that was possible."
"Neither did I."
I think back to the airport, specifically to what Vision was doing at the time of the accident. Then it comes to me.
"You were caring for Wanda Maximoff at the time," I say, and Tony looks around. "Is it possible you've formed an attachment for her?"
Vision looks away. "I do have strong feelings for Miss Maximoff. I may have subconsciously prioritised her safety over that of James Rhodes."
Tony curses. "The doctors say he shattered L4 through S1. Extreme laceration in the spinal cord," he nods to me. "Like you said - probably looking at some form of paralysis. If you didn't call out this doctor..."
"Steve's not gonna stop. If you don't either, Rhodey's gonna be the best case scenario." I gesture at the three of us. "This is it now. Nat and T'Challa are gone and Peter is way too inexperienced to be going out again any time soon and if I'm being honest, I'm not in a fit state to fight either. We're not going to win."
Tony's wrist device buzzes before he can answer, and he activates it, throwing up several holographic images. "What am I looking at, Friday?"
"Priority upload from Berlin police."
"Fire up the chopper."
"Tony, you can't go after them alone," I say, but he's already started walking away. "Steve said there are five other super-soldiers. There's no way you can win a fight against seven super-soldiers." But he's already turned the corner before I can finish.
I curse and stand. Fit state or not, I can't let him go after them alone. But before I've gone more than a couple of paces, a someone stops me.
"Miss Holmes?"
"Yeah?" I say, turning around to face him.
He takes off his surgical face mask, revealing his entire face and my mouth falls open in utter disbelief. "Hello again. I'm Doctor Strange."
