~ Avery's POV ~
I woke up at my alarm and practically groaned at remembering what day it was. My least favorite day of every year, my birthday.
There was just something about having to get one year older when nothing else is really changing. I normally just wanted to stay in bed and wait for the day to be over, but I could always count on my friends to try and drag me out of bed to do something to celebrate. I hated them for it, but I also love that they cared enough to do that for me.
But this year was different because it was my twentieth birthday. I was past my teen years and everything that allowed me to act childishly has vanished away with the clock passing midnight. I was pretty upset, I hated getting older.
Despite wanting to stay in bed, I had to get up to go to work. The past two years I've been working at a local diner. It's simple and it pays pretty well, enough for me to have my own apartment and a little spending money here and there.
I slumped out of bed and headed to my closet to pull out the skirt and collared shirt that I had been putting on since I started the job. I actually liked the bright red and white colors of it, it made me look cheerful even if I actually wasn't.
I went into the bathroom and quickly pulled my curly hair back into a pony, and put a little bit of mascara on my eyelashes and blush on my cheeks. I looked alright, I thought. Pretty good for five minute's work.
I headed out of my bedroom and practically had a heart attack when I realized that I wasn't alone in my apartment like I had thought.
"Stephen, what are you doing here?" I wondered, my voice practically scaring him too because his back was facing me as he stood in the small kitchen of my apartment.
"Jesus, Avery," Stephen said, turning around and chuckling at the surprise that I had caused him. "You practically scared the piss out of me."
"I can say the same," I said quietly, making my way over to the kitchen. "I didn't realize you spent the night," I added, trying my best to be the least awkward that I possibly could.
"Well, I couldn't forget about your birthday, could I?" Stephen asked, suddenly placing a plate of pancakes in front of me on the table, encouraging me to sit down.
"So, you cook now?" I asked, sitting down and starting to smear butter onto the warm breakfast in front of me.
"Bisquick," he said, smiling and shrugging slightly before he sat down next to me at the table. "Happy birthday," he added, turning to face me as I did the same to him. Before I could thank him, he quickly gave me a slight kiss, and then went back to his plate of pancakes.
I was a bit off put by all of this going on this morning. I didn't realize our relationship was anything more than sex and maybe some existential talks about life, but clearly there was something else brewing that I didn't even realize.
I quickly finished my pancakes, not wanting to be late to my shift. I stood up and grabbed my handbag, as Stephen was waiting right beside me.
"Where are you going?" I asked, laughing lightly as I noticed his eagerness to follow my every move.
"I thought I'd walk you to work," he said, smiling sweetly at me.
"You don't have to do that," I reasoned. "I get myself there fine every other day."
