WHISPERS ON THE WIND

《 there is no father! 》

september 21st - 12.05 am

the girl whimpered in pain while she tried to remember what exactly she had to do in this situation, but of course, she didn't remember a thing of what miss bagley and the blonde chick in charge of that pre natal class had said.

the new york city was a place that nina still didn't get used to at all in her two long years living there. at first, before moving, she had created in her mind a safe and incredible place where she could achieve and live her oh so perfect american dream, but as everything in her life, things didn't go as she had planned them in the first place.

so here she was, with an unbearable pain in her lower stomach, breathing heavily and cursing silently because this is all she could think about to redeem herself from her insecure life almost a year ago.

if it was for her family, it was worth the pain and the guilt, that miserable feeling she knew she would later feel, but she knew she could manage.

october approached rather fast and with it, the typical fall weather invaded the big apple. leaves started to slowly turn red and brown instead of their usual green, cold winds would often hit people's face, and from time to time rain would turn the skies grey. every single thing seemed to mimick the young girl's lifeless soul as the time was getting closer and closer each day that passed, and as they did a piece of nina's colourful and vivid personality would die alongside with them.

that day in particular started as every other day. it was oddly normal, way too normal to believe something wasn't going to happen.

"fuck. ashlyn hurry up..." the girl muttered. she took a glimpse to her phone screen to see when the uber she had called five minutes ago would arrive, just a few minutes left and things were going to go back to the way that it was before gina had reached out to her, or so she thought.

the pain miraculously ceased but her body still felt weird and in caution, as if it was naturally prepared for any sudden pain that may hit her within the next few minutes. the brunette took advantage of this and calmed herself down a bit, knowing that she wasn't going to make things easier with stressing over silly things.

a cold breeze made her light brown locks fly away from her sweaty but still stunning face; even sweating, without brushing her hair, with some old and baggy clothes on and with not a single drop of make up on, she still looked magnificent and that's one of the first things that would catch everyone's attention.

that's one of the main reasons why the woman had contacted her anyways.

"stay there a little longer, please" she whispered to no one... well no one that she should care about, but deep down inside of her, she knew that she cared way more than she should have. she wished things were different.

"shit!" the young looking woman cursed while she tried to control her breathing, but this was not as simple as everyone had make it look. the worst part probably was that the feeling would disappear for some minutes before some new and stronger wave of pain would appear, making her cry once more.

soon enough, her hands were sweating too while another contraction almost made her cry. never in her life three minutes had passed so slow as in that cold october night. after some silent complains from her part, a black vehicle stopped in front of the building she was currently living in, and without thinking much about it, the brown eyed girl opened the car's door and sat in the backseat abruptly.

"um sorry, you work for uber, right?" she smiled shyly, feeling a little embarrassed because of her previous sudden actions. the rearview mirror and the reflection on the front window made her notice that the driver smiled kindly and shook her head no, indicating that there wasn't any reason to apologize for.

"no problem honey and yes, i work for uber. you must be nina? i am ashlyn" the still unknown woman mentioned to which her newest client nodded without saying a single word.

nina noticed, even with some momentary pain, that this girl was young, perhaps gina's age or a year or two older. her hair was red, and her smile seemed to be sincere. not really what she was expecting from a car driver, for sure.

the very first minutes of drive were uncomfortable and awkard for the most part, especially for the girl in the backseat, mostly because she couldn't help but whimper silently or murmur some incoherent words into the air, the pain was slowly intensifying and she couldn't pretend nothing was happening for much longer.

but, as much as she tried to hide it, ashlyn quickly realized what was happening to the girl behind her. so, she tried to distract her for quite some time. after all, some talk between the driver and its client was inevitable.

"honey, i am not an expert but those you are having are contractions" she tried to make eye contact with the girl through the rearview mirror but it was not that useful, she had her eyes closed and her hands caressed her own stomach as if she was trying to somehow ease the pain. she didn't answer her either.

"girl, look. do you want me to call someone? you must have family! maybe i could call the father" the redhead suggested, this made the brunette chuckle and shake her head no slowly.

"there is no father" the girl simply replied, the driver quickly caught on and didn't ask or mention something around the topic again for the rest of the night, thinking that it was a complicated or a hard subject for her, when in fact it was quite the other way around, it was easy. there was a father, obviously, but she didn't know who the hell he was, it could be anyone, really.

"so, is it a girl or a boy? i took care of my siblings when they were young, i adore babies!" ashlyn laughed, still trying to distract nina for as long as she could.

nina smiled softly before answering briefly while her hand found the pocket of her own coat in search of her phone. "it's a girl,"

she took the device and passed it over to the woman in front of her "and thinking better now, would you please call her mother?"
