20. storm of dust - part three

"What the hell happened out there?" David roared, lunging at Connor with full force. He grabbed the younger man by the collar, instantly warranting Winona to pull him off. "I leave her alone with you for five seconds and you nearly get her killed!"

"David, stop!" Winona cried, using all of her strength to pull him back. As soon as he realized he had lost his temper, he stepped back and gulped, trying to recollect himself.

"I swear, the car came out of nowhere!" Connor panicked, throwing his hands up in defense. "It was a drunk driver, I'm so sorry. I—I tried to do everything I could but we just crashed before I could even blink!" 

As soon as she trusted David not to attack again, Winona helped Connor sit back down on the gurney. "Did they say anything at the scene of the crash? Anything at all about Katie?" she asked, fighting back the tears in her eyes. 

Connor shook his head, trying to recall the events that seemed to blur in his mind. "Uh— the uh, the paramedic couldn't get in the car to help her. He said she was dehydrated and he helped me get her IV in, but that was it. She didn't say anything to me about what hurt and where. I tried my best to help, I'm so sorry,"

"It's okay, Connor." she patted his shoulder sympathetically. "This wasn't your fault. David he— he's just scared. So am I." her voice dropped to a whisper as she peered over her shoulder, watching David as he disappeared down one of the emergency room corridors.
