It was my usual Saturday routine—heading back to my parents' house in the middle of the night after gigging at a local club. I play guitar in a band formed with my closest friends.

"I'm finally home," I muttered, slipping inside quietly and hoping my parents were already asleep.

"Where have you been, Yoo Jeongyeon?"

I froze. My mother was standing right by the door to welcome me.

Without answering, I walked straight to my room. Whether I offered an explanation or not made no difference; her anger was a constant.

Lying in bed, a grim reality set in: only one week remained before the end of summer break. Soon, a new semester would begin at my university in Suwon, where I was majoring in business at a prestigious campus. Truthfully, my heart belonged to music. I loved singing and songwriting, but my mother had insisted on business. I longed to live on my own terms rather than yield to her every command, but my savings were far too thin to grant me that independence.

My friends and I had discussed moving into an apartment together, but my mother would never tolerate me sharing a space with them.

Let me just sleep, I thought. Perhaps tomorrow, when I bring it up, a small miracle will happen. At the very least, I hoped she wouldn't dwell on how late I had come home.

The rich, savory aroma of bokkeumbap eventually coaxed me out of bed. As much as I dreaded facing my mother in the dining room, my appetite won. When I stepped downstairs, her sharp gaze met mine—an intimidating sight, as always. I did my best to appear unfazed.

"Good morning, everyone," I said, taking a seat opposite my mother and next to my older brother.

"Morning, Jeong," my brother replied quietly. My mother remained silent.

"You didn't honestly think I'd let last night slide, did you?" she remarked.

Ah, well, I thought. So much for miracles.

"Come on, Mom, you know where I was," I reasoned. "Don't worry, the band was just a summer project. Once the new term starts, I'll go back to being the ordinary student who studies hard and makes her parents proud."

I flashed a small smile as she gave a subtle nod of understanding. Thank goodness.

Taking a breath, I decided to push my luck. "Mom, I was thinking... could I move into an apartment with my friends?"

"What a ridiculous question. Absolutely not," she shot back instantly. "You're a young woman, and your friends are all guys. How could you possibly live together?"

I tried not to laugh at her instant assumption. "How do you even know the friends I'm talking about are guys?"

"Because I know you," she said flatly. "I've never seen you hang out with girls—it's always guys, especially Jackson, Taehyung, and Jimin. In fact, that's precisely why I'm transferring you to a university in Seoul. You'll be staying at your aunt's share house."

"What?! No, Mom, wait—why?!"

"You spend entirely too much time around men. What will people say? You come home late with them, and you're starting to dress and act just like them. Your aunt's share house is strictly for women, so living there might finally give you some feminine charm."

"How am I supposed to live with a house full of women? You know I—"

She cut me off before I could finish. "You'll manage. You used to have female friends when you were younger, though goodness knows why that stopped.
