Another hopeful attempt. This one's the one. Minutes felt like they could've been hours. Finally, the timer went off, and so came the disappointment. Barbra sighed, "Another time, it'll happen" she told herself, trying so desperately to keep down the waterworks. A knock came at the door, followed by the voice of Adam, her husband.
"Are you okay, Barb?" He peeked his head slightly enough to meet her face. "It came back negative didn't it?" She didn't even need to tell him, he just knew. Adam wrapped his wife in a hug. Barbra clung herself to him, sobbing so deeply she could barely hear him whisper in her ear, "Hey, it'll happen, okay? Maybe by the time we're fully moved in next month, we'll be decorating a spare room"
Barbra nodded. She lifted her head, maybe it was better, the bathroom wallpaper alone was peeling down to the floor, the water was turning brown, and the electrical sockets sparked randomly. The one bedroom apartment was surely no place for a baby, but that didn't make the pain she felt each month to get her period seem any better. Maybe that's why her body couldn't seem to let her have a baby, from the stress of moving to going through the legal processes of buying a house, maybe their miracle was waiting at the end of this tunnel.
Adam turned Barbra around to face herself in the mirror, laying chin on her shoulder and resting his arms around her waist. "Our time will come, I promise. But for now," He kissed her cheek just so she could smile again, "I made a delicious meatloaf, if I do say so myself. And I would love if you would join me for dinner." Adam spun Barbra around and placed a soft kiss on her hand. " You cooked dinner?" She smiled again, he really was the husband her younger self imagined her marrying. (minus the tiaras and crowns) Adam nodded with a prideful look on his face. Barbra melted, "I would love to."Adam and Barbra Maitland were your average newly weds, they had only been married a year, were buying their first house, and were starting to try for a family. Only problem was, Barbra didn't seem like she was going to get pregnant anytime soon. It seemed like it was never going to happen. Finally, after moving into the new house and settling in, it finally happened. Adam built a crib, they bought a miniVan, they didn't feel ready, but when are you ever? She was going to be a Mother, and that's all that mattered to Barbra. Their happiness was soon torn down just before Barbra was seven weeks along. Both Adam and her were torn, but no one was in more excruciating pain than her. So, they gave up.
"Finished the crib!" Adam called from downstairs, while Barbra was putting the finishing touches on her new pottery jugs- Something she had been using as a coping skill. "Coming" she called back as she carefully cradled the pottery in her arms down the stairs. "See!" Adam showed her the glazing brown crib, "And it's ready before Lindsay has that baby!" Barbra faked a smile, "Actually, she just called, they had it yesterday." She met Adams eyes, he knew what was on her mind. "It's a girl." She stated, making herself seem as excited as possible. Adam gave her a short hug, "The time will come" he whispered.
"I Know, besides, we still have so much we need to work on, on the house!" Barbra released herself from the embrace. "There's the wifi, the gardening, the staircase... ''she trailed off. "The bathrooms a disaster." Adam pointed out while Barbra placed her pottery jugs on the overhang shelf."We should learn Manderine!"
"Or Spanish at least!"
"No hablas Espanol, dos cervezas por lofavor." The couple said in unisom, that being the only thing they remembered from their honeymoon in Spain. "Plus, we're drowning in debt." Adam pointed out again, he took Barbra's hand to dance like they had learned in one of the classes they had taken. "But after we fix that-" Barbra paused, "We'll try again."
While taking a few more steps from the same dance, the floorboards began to creak. "Looks like will have to add that to the list!" Barbra shrugged. Adam spun her around, the next move was to jump towards each other and spin around. The doorbell rang, twice, then a third time in the span of five seconds. "Guess that puts an end to our dance break. " Adam mused, while Barbra reached for the door. Behind it, was a younger girl, probably a teenager, with black hair and sad eyes."Hi." She said coldly. "Hi there!" Barbra smiled warmly, "You must be our new neighbor?" The teen nodded. "Well this is my husband Adam." Adam slipped his arm around Barbra's shoulders. The girl gave him a seemingly forced smile. "Would you like to come in?" Adam motioned his free hand towards the inside of the house, only for his gesture to be met by the collapsing of the floorboards right where he and Barbra had been standing minutes before. "I think I'll pass." The teen said, slightly amused with what had just happened. "My names Lydia, by the way. We were supposed to buy your house but we ended up buying the one across the street. Dad wanted to move away since Mom died and Delia's making me talk to the neighbors." Adam and Barbra still stood frozen. "Who's-"
"Well, bye." She slammed the door on herself.
Both Maitlands stared at each other for a long while, coming to the realization of how close to death they came.
You will never listen to "Ready set, Not yet" the same way ever again. Otherwise.. hope you enjoyed the first chapter of this Series!!
