Chapter 3: Intruder Onboard

"Hello?" Ant asked as he glanced about before turning the corner hesitantly, "come out now" he added louder than before trying to sound brave.

The growling suddenly got louder causing Ant to stop as he glanced around hesitantly rethinking on his decision to go towards the noise.

"Please?" He added a nervous smile creeping up his face as he glanced about the room, the growling continued to growl at that level of noise.

"Hello?" Kaiko asked appearing at the door out of breath her eyes darting around the room to see where Ant was.

"Mom, never do that again you scared me" Ant sighed looking over his shoulder in barely an audible whisper  "Shh" Ant signalled putting his finger to his lips, smiling as Kaiko nodded.

Kaiko understood and walked to her son quietly glancing around the room. They looked around the boxes, the growling getting louder than before sometimes scaring Ant and Kaiko with the sudden loud growl.

"It's coming from under the sheet" Ant whispered slowly backing away hiding behind his mother clutching her right hand.

Kaiko glanced behind her seeing Ant then turned to the sheet. She stretched her hand hesitantly to rip the sheet off.

"Ant?" Will asked abruptly over his comm making the pair flinch and Kaiko pull her hand away gasping, "what's in the docking bay?"

"Hang on Dad" Ant replied his attention returning to the figure under the sheet as the growling got quieter.

Kaiko reached out again and ripped off the sheet revealing... Nereus?

"Mister Nereus?" Ant questioned a smile forming on his scared face, he expected some sort of alien or if not at least someone except Nereus. Kaiko's turned to a frown looking upon the sleeping old man snoring with the scroll to his right and his cane to his left. His growling turned out to be just very loud snoring.

Ant chuckled "you have very loud snoring" as he slowly walked from behind Kaiko to the sleeping man.

"I think he is like Fontaine a deep sleeper," Kaiko chuckled gently shaking Nereus.

"Mom!" Fontaine whined over her comm listening in on the pair's conversation "I can hear you know"

Kaiko chuckled "I know you can Fontaine, but it is true"

Fontaine grumbled as she started to make her way out of the vents towards the docking bay.

"Nereus?" Ant asked shaking the man.

Nereus flinched at Ant's cold touch and woke up with a start, carefully studying his surroundings.

"Kaiko? Anteus? What are you doing here?" He asked perplexed on his whereabouts, furrowing his eyebrows as he blinked a couple of times taking in his surroundings.

"Will I think we've found our intruder" Kaiko commented, placing her hand on her hip talking over her comm.

"Uhh, this is our home, why are you here?" Ant asked the confused man a curious look on his face.

"Oh, me? I just wanted to check something in the chronicle." He replied stroking his beard as usual as he sat up slowly.

Kaiko and glanced over to each other, both displaying a smile.

"And where am I again?" He asked once more his comment echoing through the room as he turned to the pair.

"Mom? Nereus is acting weird" Ant exclaimed tapping on Kaiko's hand attracting Kaiko's attention.

"When is he never weird," Kaiko remarked a smile on her face as she glanced over at Nereus.

Ant cracked a smile as he let a few chuckles escape his mouth. Once he settled down again he turned to the old man.

"Hello, William," Nereus said waving his hand in a drunk manner still talking to Ant.

Both Ant and Kaiko turned to the door expecting to see Will, when they turned no one was there, which only worried them further.

"Umm, Mom?" Ant asked once again turning to Kaiko as he gestured to Nereus.

"Are you okay Nereus?" Kaiko asked as she tilted her head, beginning to get worried at his even stranger behaviour, she knew Nereus could be strange at some times but never this strange.

He hummed in response, nodding his head.

"You sure?"

"Me? I'm okay" he replied again slurring his words into one whole word still nodding his head.

"I think he has got a concussion?" Kaiko questioned examining him and his movements carefully stretching her hand out to feel his temperature on his forehead, his temperature seemed fine to her.

"Will I need your help getting him to the infirmary"

"Infirmary, no need Kaiko I'm fine" the old man protested pushing her hand away from him.

"How's your vision?"Kaiko asked observing his behaviour

"My vision is fine and I'm even finer" Nereus replied trailing off into barely an audible whisper.

"Nereus you really aren't fine" Ant chimed in lifting up two fingers, "how many fingers am I holding up?"

"3"

"Uhh," Ant said counting his fingers himself to make sure "close enough"

Will, Fontaine and Odette walked into the room to see Nereus slumped up against a crate. Will was pushing a stretcher along, it would be easier than carrying him there.

"Uhh, Nereus?" Fontaine asked gesturing to the scroll  "how did you get into the safe and the Aronax?"

"Hello Odette" he replied ignoring her question completely, Fontaine tilted her head in confusion.

Last time she checked she was not Odette. Nereus, on the other hand, winced in pain as his head throbbed blurring his vision.

"Uhh Mom, I think he has a concussion" Fontaine replied looking towards Kaiko with a worried expression.

"Yep, definitely a concussion," Kaiko said "can you take him to the infirmary Will, I need to check to make sure he hasn't damaged anything in that head of his,"

Will cracked a smile at Kaiko's remark but with Odette's help slowly lifted him a put him on the stretcher and grabbed his cane as well.
