It was soft enough that I should've gone on sleeping without so much as twitching an earlobe in its direction. Why oh why did I not have a nightlight on the bedside table?
My nerves jangled wildly. Was there a squirrel in the wardrobe? Perhaps a pigeon? Trembling, I opened the door just a nick and retched on the smell of rotted fish and seaweed. Something scooted, no, slithered past me, all squelches and fart sounds. I lunged for the light switch.
A thin trail of slime lead across the bedroom and behind the curtain.
