Thorn rubbed his sleepy eyes and suddenly noticed the sign indicating they were nearing La Push. He looked over to his mother, who was humming to an indie tune, and called out, "Uh, Mom..."

"Yes?" Catherina responded in tune to the current song.

Thorn scratched his head, confusion evident in his tone as he asked, "Um, Mom... I'm not sure if you're lost, but isn't Forks the other way?"

She nodded her head in confirmation, replying, "Yeah, I thought I'd make a detour and visit some old friends."

Thorn furrowed his brow, his curiosity piqued by her words. "Old friends?" he questioned, perplexed. "When have you ever been to La Push?"

Catherina chuckled softly, glancing at her son as she explained, "It was roughly 45 years ago, when you had gone for that meditation ritual. At that time, I ended up visiting here on a recommendation from one of the healers I was studying with."

A playful smirk appeared on her son's face as he inquired, "Did you happen to meet anyone special while you were there?"

Catherina feigned disbelief, playfully asking, "Are you suggesting it was a pleasure trip?" She chuckled at her son's silent affirmation.

She continued, "Oh, goodness no! I went to La Push to assist with medical distribution. Plus, most of the people in the Rez were wary of outsiders then. I was fortunate that they needed my medical expertise at the time."

"So, your friends... Aren't they pretty old now?" Thorn questioned.

Catherina's eyes softened as she nodded her head slowly in response. "They should be in their late fifties...yes," she murmured sadly.

Thorn's eyes widened, realizing his insensitive choice of words, and he quickly lowered his head in embarrassment. "Sorry," he mumbled, feeling guilty.

Catherina smiled gently and reassured him, "It's okay; I know you didn't mean it maliciously."

The car fell into a contemplative silence as the current song came to an end. Thorn pursed his lips before shifting the conversation, asking, "Did they know about you being a witch?"

Catherina chuckled at her son's barrage of questions and turned to face him, her smile softening as she replied, "Well, aren't you just firing off the queries. But to answer your question, yes, they know, and surprisingly, they were quite empathetic to it."

"If only everyone was as understanding as them," Thorn mused, letting out a weary sigh and leaning against the cool window. "Life would be much simpler for us," he added quietly.

Catherina didn't respond, her thoughts once again drifting into the past, recollecting the time when her father suddenly announced his quest to wage war against the wicked.
