Catherina learned that the young wolf, Seth Clearwater, was roughly the same age as her son Thorn, at least in physical terms. She had only received a name from Jacob when her son and the young Quileute began discussing the recent occurrence. While she was open to the concept in theory, she was now grappling with the reality, realizing that if her son accepted the idea of imprinting—it was a mutual commitment.
The realization that her son accepting the idea of imprinting could lead to the possibility of Catherina and Thorn eventually parting ways hit her.
Garrett sat down beside Catherina on the stairs at the back of the Cullen home and casually asked, "So, Mama Bird, how are you taking your son finding his soulmate?"
Catherina, seated on the staircase, couldn't help but inwardly acknowledge that she had deliberately chosen this spot as she had seen her son and Seth walking in this direction. She was being quite obvious with her intentions.
Catherina let out a mumbling protest, "I can't be that bad," but Garrett just chuckled and gave her arm a nudge with his elbow.
Garrett's teasing tone laced with sarcasm filled the air as he replied, "Well, considering you've been out here for a few hours, I would have never guessed otherwise."
Catherina tried to feign indifference, but her worry was evident. "I've just been... pondering about a few things. I was just passing time," she lied, not wanting to reveal her anxious thoughts.
Catherina's attempt at nonchalance didn't go unnoticed by Garrett, who chuckled and called her out on her act. "And I suppose you just happened to pass time right here, where you could conveniently keep tabs on your son and his new friend?"
Catherina, caught in her attempt to play off her concern, could only muster a sheepish smile. "It's that obvious, huh?" she admitted, knowing her actions had given her away. She reluctantly accepted Garrett's observation, knowing that she had been caught in the act. "Okay, maybe I have been keeping an eye on them," she confessed.
Garrett chuckled, seeing right through her. "And by 'keeping an eye' you mean you've been watching them like a hawk," he teased.
Catherina sheepishly tried to downplay it, "It's not like that."
Not fooled, Garrett raised an eyebrow and continued, "Oh really? You're telling me you're not being your usual protective 'mama bird' self right now?"
She had to admit that Garrett was spot on with his assessment. "Okay, maybe I am being a bit overprotective," she admitted reluctantly.
He chuckled, clearly amused by her behavior. "A bit? You've been sitting here all afternoon, acting like a watchtower."
She sighed, realizing that her concern was transparent. "All right, I'll admit it. I'm worried," she confessed, her voice tinged with a hint of anxiousness.
