CHAPTER TWELVE
(lottie)Catherina was a fiercely independent and solitary individual. Throughout her centuries of existence, she had honed her intuition as her most trusted guide. People might perceive her reliance on her instincts as impulsive, but for Catherina, it was a path she trusted to help her meet her expectations. Having lived a long life, she was not one easily swayed by manipulation, her convictions firmly rooted in her own experience and understanding.
Catherina's intelligence shone through in the way she utilized her past mistakes as guiding markers. She shared Carlisle's compassion and dedication to their shared values. It was somewhat humorous that if you put the two siblings together, they'd appear like a mirror image, their similarities making them almost indistinguishable.
Despite their similarities, the differences between them were equally evident. Catherina possessed a more playful and uninhibited nature, while Carlisle maintained a more serious demeanor. Yet, paradoxically, they both still represented the perfect balance in a unique and intriguing way.
The thought was almost comical, considering that neither of them would have ever imagined they'd come to love the supernatural beings they once despised. Yet, that part of their history remained hidden, and most were oblivious to the secret bond they'd formed. Their secretiveness, a well-worn cloak that shielded their unusual journey.
The thought could almost be considered condescending, but there was a certain satisfaction in knowing that some things were better left unsaid. It reminded one that secrets could sometimes preserve the purity of a relationship rather than revealing its every intricacy.
...
Catherina and her brother stood apart from the rest, observing the gathering around the campfire. In a hushed tone, Catherina spoke to her sibling, a hint of trepidation in her voice. "Li, what would you do if a battle were to take place?"
It was clear that the pair preferred to keep their thoughts to themselves, taking life as it came and not lingering on the past. It was a habit they'd become accustomed to, perhaps a learned response to their preference for facing the present and not dwelling on what was behind them.
Carlisle reply was swift and direct, his voice carrying a tinge of worry. "One can only hope it never reaches that point," he responded. "However, I'm afraid even I can't guarantee that things will go smoothly."
Catherina leaned against her brother's shoulder, offering support and reassurance. "It's alright to be afraid sometimes," she said soothingly. "Optimism needs a break every now and then. You're allowed to feel uncertain."
Carlisle's arm wrapped around Catherina's shoulder, squeezing her reassuringly. "Easier said than done," he acknowledged. "But I suppose it doesn't hurt to allow ourselves a moment of vulnerability."
