CHAPTER THREE
(shapeshifters)Catherina was engrossed in her conversation with Billy and lost all track of time. It was only when she noticed that the sky, previously lit by daylight, was now draped in the dark blanket of night that she realized how much time had slipped away.
While Catherina was blissfully unaware of the passing time, Thorn on the other hand had been keenly conscious of the ticking hours. Though he had been a part of the ongoing conversation about the Quileute tribe, he couldn't help but notice the gradual transition of light to darkness.
In the past, Billy would have been reluctant to freely discuss the tribe's secrets, especially in the presence of outsiders. However, since Catherina and Thorn possessed knowledge about shape-shifters and had encountered a few along their journeys, Billy felt at ease in disclosing more information about the Quileute tribe.
Catherina and Thorn, who had the ability to sense shape-shifters, felt the presence of the supernatural beings, although Thorn could detect it more acutely than his mother. Despite his heightened awareness, Thorn struggled to articulate the inexplicable yearning that consumed his body and soul, leaving it a mystery even to himself.
The day proved to be a delightful one for Catherina, as she engaged in heartfelt conversation with Billy, learning about his late wife Sarah and their children. The talk extended for far longer than usual, as the parents joyfully recounted tales of their children's embarrassing moments. Much to Thorn's embarrassment, he refrained from interfering due to the happiness that sparkled in his mother's eyes.
The subject of discussion took an emotional turn when Billy shared the news of Harry Clearwater. Although Catherina had encountered many loved ones who had passed on, telling herself that everything was fine or that they were in a better place never became any easier.
There was a short silence as Billy let Catherina take some time to control her emotions and gather her thoughts, sensing her inner turmoil. After a few moments, Catherina managed to compose herself and spoke with a mix of sadness and gratitude," Thank you for telling me, Billy. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you and the others"
Despite once being deeply immersed in Christianity in her human life, Catherina no longer subscribed to the belief in an afterlife. Her thoughts drifted to a time long ago, when it was just her, Carlisle, and her father.
Christopher, her father, his memory a distant one.
The name had remained unheard for centuries, as her memories of her father had faded into the depths of her mind. Unlike her older brother, she didn't possess many fond recollections of him, and she was uncertain whether she even wanted the memories to resurface.
At the tender age of five, her father had already begun to devote his entire existence to hunting. He was rarely at home and seldom found time for his family, a stark contradiction to the primary motivation behind his crusade against evil. How could he claim to act in their best interest when he failed to fulfill the role he had assumed as a parent?
