"Hero, I'm glad you asked!" the peasant woman said eagerly, "There is a matter of great importance which only you can resolve!"
"Is this important matter in the forest?" Lang asked, "To the east perhaps?"
"Uh... yes?"
"Bada bing bada boom!" the man clapped his hands.
Azazel elbowed him, "Pay attention."
"Sorry, you were saying?"
"Right," the peasant nodded, "So I like to hunt out in the woods, but yesterday all of the animals had disappeared! The forest was silent! Then I came across a clearing where there was a dark circle on the ground. It was swirling about with inky blackness. Suddenly a demon jumped out! I ran away as fast as I could!"
"So you want us to get rid of the demons and the portal to the underworld?"
"If you wouldn't mind."
"I accept your quest madam," Lang bowed theatrically, "Consider the unholy spawn already banished."
The two adventurers set off into the woods for the second time that day. Lang's map was becoming quite well filled in. Their quests thus far had given them a good tour of the woods. The quest to find the shield which they had just completed detailed much of the west and now the east was the only cardinal direction without much data.
"What kind of demons will there be?" Azazel queried. She thought back to the ones she had encountered thus far. Most were all quite powerful and frightening, but they had all been threatening entire cities or domains. Would the demons in the forest be like that?
"Most likely, not very strong ones," Lang answered, "The village of Bedro is small and this is not part of any main questline. At worst we'll face another decoy demon or something."
"Hey, I thought the guards were dealing with the demons," the woman recalled, "That was why we have to do these little quests because the guards are preoccupied. Why aren't they taking care of these demons?"
"Because they're dealing with the Cult of Faraday."
"What? You can't just switch out what evil faction the guards are dealing with! I distinctly remember you saying that they were dealing with demons!"
"Are the cultists not a threat?"
"Well, yes they are, but I get the feeling that if we were to come across any cultists then the guards would be occupied with the necromancers or something."
"Azazel, do you know why the guards never actually seem to deal with the problems of their citizens?" Lang stopped and turned to his companion.
"Because they're lazy? I don't know."
"Because if they did all of these quests, where would we be?"
"Saving the world?"
Lang frowned, "Okay, yes, but that's not quite what I meant. If the guards actually did what they're supposed to, then there would be no flavor to the world. Towns like these would have no character. We would just walk through and maybe stop at the inn for a night. There's no reason to learn more."
"So the guards don't do their job because... they want us to enjoy exploring a small town?" Azazel furrowed her brow, "That doesn't make sense."
"Well, have you enjoyed doing these little quests?" Lang asked, smiling once again.
"I still think our time could be better spent going to the castle down the road."
"You didn't answer the question."
