I quickly left the study room and ran downstairs to see mom setting her purse down on the kitchen counter.

"Oh! You're back!" She said, smiling. I nodded. Before I could say anything, she reached into her purse and brought out my walkie talkie, handing it to me. "Now I know that I can trust you. I want you home before me everyday, understand?" She said.

"But... Why? You always let me stay out late." I said. Mom froze and turned around slowly.

"I was going to let you go out late, but..." She sighed. "You've heard about a kid name Will Byers go missing, right?" She asked. I nodded. "I was friends with his mom a while back, but... She did something that, umm.. I didn't really like, so.. I cut off any contact I had with her." She said.

"What did she do? She seems nice." I said. I paused.

"You know her?" Mom asked. I panicked.

"No I'm just saying... Maybe she's nice." I corrected. That was close. Too close.

"As I was saying. I don't want you to go missing like him." Mom said. I sighed.

"Mom, I'm not gonna get kidnapped! Just let me stay out later." I begged. She was quiet for a few seconds.

"Fine. But you have to be back before eleven." She replied. I smiled.

"Thanks." I said, grabbing my walkie talkie. As I walked up the stairs, mom stopped me.

"Oh, and do you know the boy that was outside of our house? Brown curly hair, wearing a hat?" She asked. I froze, my eyes widened.

"Oh, um, probably just Samantha's brother." I lied.

"Hm. But Samantha has blonde hair?" She said.

"Well, he's adopted." I said, putting on my best poker face. Mom gave me a stone cold stare before walking up the stairs slowly.

I ran up to my room and shut the door, turning on my walkie talkie.

"Dustin, are you there? It's y/n!" I said. I waited for a response.

"Are you gonna say over? Over." I heard Dustin say. I rolled my eyes, laughing.

"I got my walkie talkie back. And, I can stay out later. Over." I said.

"Cool! More time to finish our project. Over." Dustin replied.

"Anyways, how's the girl? Over." I asked.

"Sorry, what'd you say? You're breaking up. Over." Dustin said. I frowned.

"Nothing. Wanna go to the store with me tomorrow to get a new walkie talkie? Over." I asked.

"Sure. Maybe we could get some supplies, too. Over." He suggested.

"Sounds like a plan. See you tomorrow at school, Dustin. Over and out." I waited for Dustin to reply.

"Alright. Over and out." Dustin said. Suddenly, it got quiet. There was just static on the other end. I turned my walkie talkie off and placed it on my bedside table.

I woke up early the next day, before anyone else. I got dressed for the day. I decided to wear a black blouse with yellow, red and blue shapes on it. I put on some mom jeans.

I went downstairs and headed for the living room. Our TV is super old. Mom and dad make a good amount of monry but always spend it on us instead of buying a new TV.

I sat down on the couch and turned the TV on to watch something before heading out for school.

A few minutes later, everyone was up. Mom hurriedly ran around the house, instructing Laura and my dad on what to do since she was staying late today.

"Oh, and Y/n. Wash the dishes for me please!" She said before grabbing her purse. Mom opened the door that led to the garage and closed it behind her.

I got up and headed to where I kept my shoes, next to the front door. I put on my white converse and grabbed my bag.

"Hey! Mom told you to do the dishes!" Laura said. I shrugged and went into the garage, grabbing my bike.

I stopped in front of Dustin's house. I used to do this a long time ago, but... Something happened.

I waited a bit before I saw him walk out of the house, putting on his backpack.

"I know, mom!" He yelled while heading over to his bike. The door shut behind him. I smiled as I watched him adjust his hat.

"Hey, Dustin!" I called out. He looked over and smiled.

"Y/n?" He said, quickly pedaling over.

"I got up early so I decided to wait for you." I said.

"That's nice." He replied. "Y/n, I have to tell you something."
