" I SAID, HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEWS?"
(Nathan Russells)
The soft melody of birds began to play signifying the start of a new day.
The dated fabric of the curtains, shielding Nathan from the outside world, started to ripple at the touch of the cool morning breeze which allowed graceful shafts of light to pour into his bedroom.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The repetitive tune of his alarm clock woke Nathan from his slumber.
His long, brown lashes fluttered and parted as he brought his hands up to his eyes, rubbing the leftovers of sleep from them.
He slowly sat up and glanced over his surrounding.
He swung his legs out from under his covers and into the carpet of his room.
He pulled himself up from his bed and lazily dragged his body into the bathroom.
He stood there for a moment, as he did every morning, and stared at his reflection as if he was waiting for it to move of its own.
He looked into his deep brown eyes which were stained with a honey tint by the sunlight coming through the small window behind him.
He studied his mop of hair tossed around by sleep and lightly scoffed, finding his current condition humorous.
He moved his focus on to his toothbrush.
He picked it up, grabbing the toothpaste at the same time and squeezed a line onto the fine bristles of the brush and put it in his mouth.
As his mouth began to fill with white, minty foam, he spat it out into his sink and washed out with residue with a hand full of water and another for his face.
He made his way downstairs into his living room, which was openly connected with his kitchen.
As he made his way past the table he spotted the remote to the TV.
He picked it up and pressed the power button, turning it on.
With the faint buzz of the television playing in the background, he walked into the kitchen.
He grabbed the kettle, filling it with water, and placed it on the stove to heat up and eventually boil.
While he waited he took a seat on the chair of the kitchen table.
Placing his elbow on the wooden surface, his chin in the palm of his hand, he began to stare off at nothing in particular - zoning out.
Suddenly the blaring alarm of a police van made its self known as it zoomed past, an ambulance following closely behind it.
Nathan's head jerked quickly out of his hand as he stared wide-eyed out the window to find the source of the noise, only to find the same build of authoritative vehicles drive by with the addition of a fire engine.
"Jesus" he muttered under his breath, his Irish accent darkened by sleep," Must be serious".
The sharp whistle of the kettle alerted Nathan, telling he the water was boiled.
He made is way over and emptied the steaming liquid into a mug with a teabag inside.
After the tea, he made his way back up into his room and changed into his tidy work clothes which consisted of a suit and tie.
As he strode towards the front door he grabbed his house keys and car keys.
Stepping out into the open for the first time that day and feeling the cold touch of the winter air sent a chill up Nathan's spine.
As he slid into his black Toyota, his phone rang.
Seeing with was his good friend Mark, who he had known since school, he pressed the answer button and put the device on the dashboard.
"Hey, Nath!" , Mark exclaimed, "You good?"
"Yeah, you?" He questions back while he began to pull out of his empty road and drive into a busy one.
"Oh, I'm cool man" Mark paused, "but have you seen the n-", his voice was interrupted by a loud sound made by the propellers of a passing helicopter, causing Nathan to wince in annoyance at the sudden noise.
"Sorry mate could you say that again?" Nathan requested.
"I said, have you seen the news?" Mark said. Nathan's eyebrows lowered in confusion.
" No, why? ", he asked.
"Well, I heard something happened at a hospital 'round here last night, said it was because of some disease " Mark explained. Nathan was silent for a moment, taking in the information.
He shrugged, "probably nothing" he replied "but keep me up to date. Don't really have time to check myself"
" Alright cool, talk to you later!" Mark said, drawing their short conversation to a close.
"Bye," Nathan answered as the line cut off with the sound of a beep.
As Nathan continued to drive down the road he noticed the absence of both people and sound.
However, he focused on the lack of noise.
He solved this by pressing the button that turns on the radio as fate music began to fill the car.
As he hummed to the unoriginal melody, he noticed the red light and stopped his car.
He looked around at his surroundings.
By doing this he saw that his car was clearly outnumbered by police vans and ambulances with only a few normal cars in sight.
The ambulance in front of his blocked his view.
However, through the tiny back window, he was able to make out the frantic moments of paramedics and what looked like a patient.
Many questions began to fill his mind but abandoned them with the shake of his head, looking up as the traffic light turned green signalling him to go.
As he continued his journey saw different vehicles behind one another, waiting for the business to pass, causing him to let out an irritated sigh as his car slowed down.
He lent back in his car seat. The noise of both car horns and mediocre music made Nathan role his eyes.
As if he wishes were granted the music cut off only to be replaced with a news announcement.
"BREAKING NEWS, following an earlier incident, there has been an increase in the infected. This virus, created by products that remain unknown, has made its way into the community and is infecting more civilians. "
Nathan lowered his eyebrows in both confusion and worry.
"We have discovered that the victims of the virus have developed violent tendencies and have begun to att-".
