MADELEINE THOUGHT SHE HAD FACED THE SCARIEST PART OF THE SUPERNATURAL WORLD. She was a witch. Surrounded by vampires. Destined to kill everyone she loved. Her best friend was killed by her ex-boyfriend and then he kidnapped her and held her hostage for a week before she found him dead. But this was something she hadn't expected. A newfound fear she had never considered.

The only friend she truly had, the one she had pushed away out of fear, was dead. But unlike Charlotte Czerny, Caroline was able to rise from the dead as the very thing that Madeleine feared.

Stefan may be one example of a good vampire but that didn't mean that they were all good. Damon was a good example of the opposite. Nate was a better example.

She never considered that Caroline could ever be a bad vampire. But she also never considered that Nate could be either. From what she learnt, vampirism heightened what is already there. It was hard to imagine that Nate was ever a fraction as malicious as he was as a vampire. She knew Caroline was different but how different was the fearful question.

Nonetheless, Madeleine refused to abandon Caroline. Although doubt wriggled inside her, she wanted to believe in the best version of Caroline. And after the amount of cruelty and pushing away that Madeleine had projected onto Caroline, she owed it to her.

Stefan had been the one to ask her to make a daylight ring for Caroline. Bonnie was still unhappy with Caroline's transition and felt uncomfortable to aid her in her new form. Madeleine had no experience in making daylight rings but she would try at least.

Damon and Elena were heading on a road trip to Duke to look into Isobel's research along with Alaric. Stefan, being the only grounded vampire in town, offered to help Caroline through her transition.

He'd been the one to show up at Madeleine's house to make sure she was okay. He wasn't blind to the fact that she was terrified yesterday. Nate was a horrible example of possibilities and since that week in his basement, she'd been afraid. Even if she didn't say it, it was obvious by the way she flinched if one of them stepped too close. By the way she guarded her skin as if the contact would burn her. Yesterday, she pushed through to be a good friend. Something that had also been difficult to do recently.

He begged Madeleine to help him with Caroline's transition. As a human friend, it was important that Caroline stayed grounded. She needed to be reminded of her human side at every opportunity. And as a witch, it was helpful if Madeleine could craft a daylight ring. Something that would help Caroline adjust and help Madeleine practice her magic.

So she agreed and they were currently in Caroline's room. The drapes were closed while Madeleine worked on the spell. Her ancestors grimoire was still difficult to understand. It blew Madeleine's mind that she could read a language that she'd never learnt. Stefan presented Madeleine with a ring formed of lapis lazuli, one of the oldest spiritual stones known to man. It's most common use amongst witches was daylight jewellery.
