BORN TO DIE
MASQUERADEMADELEINE TOSSED AND TURNED AS TWISTED DREAMS HAUNTED HER SLEEP. Madeleine wanted to believe that Damon was wrong. She wouldn't actually kill someone. Curse or not, she was human, she couldn't imagine a world where she would take someone's life. On the other hand, she never imagined a world with witches and vampires and vengeful spirits possessing the bodies of young girls to kill everyone in sight. Madeleine was terrified. If she killed, what made her so different from Nate? After all he was once a human too, plagued by the supernatural disease.
Madeleine stared at the ceiling and released a frustrated sigh as sleep refused to greet her. Her room was dark, almost pitch black aside from the moonlight that was breaking way through her curtains. It had to be about three in the morning. She had been trying to get to sleep for two hours.
Madeleine's hand found her necklace. Her mother's necklace. Madeleine still didn't know the significance of the necklace but at this point it didn't matter. It felt like the only thing connecting her to her mom. A simple silver necklace with a milky stone pendent was all she had left. A thought plagued Madeleine's mind. Almost everything in her life has been a lie. Was how her mother died a lie too?
Madeleine felt a chill graze her bare arms. The shiver broke her from her thoughts. She looked at her window, the moonlight growing as her curtains blew open. She was sure she had closed her it earlier. Madeleine pulled her covers off her body and walked over to her window. Her eyes scanned the driveway. There was no one there. Suspicion settled in her stomach. Madeleine closed her window. She felt another breeze but this time it was behind her. Madeleine spun round and jumped out of her skin.
"I hear you've been looking for me." It was freaky. She had Elena's face, Elena's voice but she was nothing like her. The way Katherine spoke was cold. It was filled with so much disgust and hatred. Even the way she composed herself was the complete opposite to Elena. And yet the looked exactly the same.
"I need your help."
Katherine laughed a menacing laugh. "Not a chance."
"My curse originates back centuries. You know more than Stefan and Damon could string together." Madeleine tried to explain but she should've known better. Katherine was not to be reasoned with.
Katherine took a moment to think. She didn't stop herself from snooping around. Her hand trailed Madeleine's bookshelf. She picked up a picture of Madeleine and Charlotte at the founder's parade three years ago. Madeleine felt her heart leap from her chest. She didn't like the idea of anything fragile in Katherine's hands. "What will you do for me?"
Madeleine swallowed. She should've known. "What do you want?"
Katherine put the frame back on the bookshelf. "A message. You're going to tell the Stefan and Damon that I want the moonstone or I will rip this town apart till it rains blood. Tonight, at the Masquerade ball. Do a good job and maybe I will find something worth telling you."
