Chapter 5
🌹🌹🌹An intense whiff of low-quality alcohol hit my nostrils, my face crinkled in pure disgust, unable to withstand the foul odor. If there wasn’t a need for keeping up appearances, I would have turned around and thrown up on the sidewalk. All of my senses have been tainted with the appalling environment of The Serpent, but I pushed myself to keep going, the others are counting on me. The air circulating through this certain nightclub felt icky and unsettling, constantly radiating the vibe of uncertainty. While I had dealt with similar situations before, this topped all the others, simply because such a place existed behind Crimson’s borders.
Digging into my jacket pocket, I fished out a chunk of Hubba Bubba and popped it into my mouth, Within an instant, the iconic flavor coated my tongue and I regained my composure, carrying on with the task at hand. My rhythm of chewing remained constant with my forced casual stroll as I made my way to the bar. A drunken couple intentionally bumped into me, momentarily causing me to stumble over the heels dressing my feet. After stringing together an extensive chain of curse words, I regained my composure and slipped through the bodies occupying the floor. Once I made it to my destination, I took a seat and observed my surroundings.
It was known that The Serpent served poorly made alcohol on a daily basis, yet people still came back. They couldn’t stay away, they were addicted. Through extensive research, reconnaissance, and snooping around on Hyungsik’s part, it came to light that this nightclub is owned and managed by a man of the Sato Mafia. As they were in an alliance with Robyn, it was a given that the man’s drugs were being distributed to Serpent customers. Whether it was intentional or not, the poor souls that walk through those doors would never be able to erase themselves from the club’s legacy. Because of that, the Sakurai siblings were quick to add this location to the hit list, and tonight is the night where we execute and take the head of the man in charge.
Tapping my fingers against the counter, I impatiently waited for service from the bartender. However, I knew better than to actually drink the beverages they offered, after all, it was laced with Robyn’s product.
“How many do you see Sweet?” Mae Unnie questioned through my earpiece.
Taking a very casual glance around the nightclub, I knocked my fist on the counter to signal any and every guard I saw. Looking up to the second-floor loft, I immediately found our man of the night, surrounded by several more bodyguards. He wore a smug expression on his face as he watched the dance floor. I turned back to face the bar.
“Eleven? Why only eleven?” Unnie questioned.
“When I was here last, there were almost twenty,” Kei jumped in. “Sweet-Chan, please be careful.”With a firm nod, I turned my attention back to the drink that was now in front of me. I had no interest in drinking it as I knew it was laced with Robyn’s product, something we now call nano. It wasn’t on my bucket list to become a nano addict, I’d rather live on bubble gum for the rest of my life. While I stirred the foul and tarnished beverage, I managed to keep up the appearance of a lone customer.
My mind and body remained idle as I observed my teammate's movements on my commtacts. The brains of the mission was sitting in a van, currently parked at the park located a block away. As usual, MaeLin Unnie was utilizing Cardinal’s vast program to guide us through this mission. As for the Sakurai twins, they were sitting on the roof and watching from the skylight, waiting to drop in with their men once the signal was given. Meanwhile, Monte was in the middle of the action alongside me, currently chatting up an employee with a seemingly friendly attitude. Lastly, there was-
“Hey sweet thing, how about you spent the night with me?” a drunken man slurred, his nasty breath laced heavily with alcohol.
Mentally, I angrily shook my head and furrowed my eyebrows together in frustration. When I went into this mission, I knew I was running the risk of being hit on by the men in the club, and having them invade my personal space. Everyone knew that I hated having my personal proximity of comfort be compromised by total and complete strangers. Being touched or being approached by people that I didn’t know was out of the question, it made my skin crawl. The only people I allowed to have contact with me were my sisters, Crimson’s pups, and the boys. When I felt that man grab my arm, I was close to losing it and smashing my glass onto his face.
“I advise you to move away,” I hissed.
Unfortunately, the man didn’t heed my warning, instead moving closer and invading my personal space further.
“She said to back off.”
“Jungkook, you idiot!” I mentally cursed.Turning around, I witnessed Jungkook crushing the life out of the man’s arm, so much so that his arm was turning purple from the lack of blood flow. Within an instant, the drunken man’s grip on my arm was released and I pulled back in disgust. When I made eye contact with Jungkook, I could see the anger burning behind his dark orbs. To say that he was protective of me was an understatement, he despised the thoughts of another man touching me was enough to drive him over the edge. Now that he’s seen it with his own eyes, I was afraid that he was going to compromise the entire mission!
Over Cardinal’s network, I could hear everyone panicking; our earpieces were being flooded with noise from the other teammates. Their words were mirroring my exact thoughts, Jungkook was edging closer and closer to throwing this mission off the rails. Why couldn’t he just control himself for one night?
“Kaito, you need to take the shot now!” Monte signaled. “The guards noticed Jungkook’s behavior!”
Before I could react, Jungkook threw the man to the side and dove towards me. His arms wrapped around me as he pushed me to the floor, using his own body to shield me from the madness that erupted at the sound of Kaito’s rifle.
“Ito is down, move in!”With Jungkook’s larger body on top of mine, he endured being trampled by the people trying to escape. Even though his body was strong, I could hear and feel him grunting from the pain and taking feet to his body.
Once the screaming died down, it was replaced with the sounds of gunshots and glass breaking. The others were quick to jump into the nightclub and start firing at anything that moved. Both Jungkook and I were in a bad position to begin with, things only got worse with Jungkook’s impulse. Neither of us could risk moving into anyone’s line of sight, even if we were dressed in our bulletproof armor. As the barrage of gunshots continued, Jungkook still remained on top of me, using his arms to protect my head.
“I’m sorry Noona,” he said while in pain. “I shouldn’t have left my post.”
I didn’t say anything, instead whipping my gun out and shooting a man aiming for us. Ignoring the fact that someone twice my size was on top of me, and I was on the floor, I still emptied my clip, helping my teammates out. After only a few minutes, the once chaotic club fell to a pin drop. Once the dust settled, I sat back in my spot at the bar. The silent atmosphere allowed me to swim through my thoughts; was I mad at Jungkook for breaking character as a Serpent security guard, and forcing us to prematurely take the shot? Or was I relieved that he jumped in when he did? Whatever my thoughts eventually settled to, the most important thing is that another one of Robyn’s men is dead, and the Sato Mafia is one step closer to tumbling, right?
“Noona…?” I heard Jungkook approach me timidly.
When I didn’t reply for the second time, he simply enveloped me in a hug and continued to apologize. I know Jungkook was concerned about my safety, especially when it came to being on the same team during a mission.
It’s just sometimes I wish he would trust me a little more, I’m capable of protecting myself.
Hey guys, Ao here!
My apologies for the long wait, but I hope you enjoyed it!
