Chapter 9
🌹🌹🌹Sae-Young's POV
With the moon suspended over us, Hyungsik led the way through one of the many alleyways in Daegu. Having never run any missions in this city, it would be very easy for me to get lost or be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hyungsik meanwhile, was knowledgeable in navigating Daegu, I was comfortable with relying on him for directions. Currently, we were heading to a club called 7th Gate, which apparently was owned by an acquaintance was Hyungsik's. I was aware that he worked with other information brokers to bring down the right people, but this one felt oddly different. Although he didn't elaborate on how he knew the owner, I did notice that there was a slight tone of disdain in his voice when he spoke of this person. My curiosity did emerge, however, I tamed the thoughts of asking any further questions.
To say that this alleyway was a dump was an understatement, one could only understand the state of this backstreet if they were to see it with their own eyes. Piles upon piles of garbage littered the streets, it was almost impossible to see the pavement beneath my shoes. Countless bottles of alcohol; beer cans, wine, and soju bottles were just as rampant as the garbage. Not only the physical appearance was a problem, but the people lurking around was trouble waiting to happen. Just by looking around, this was a breeding ground for illegal business. Which is quite ironic if anything.
I suddenly picked up on the sound a wolf whistle, most likely aimed in my direction. Observing that I was the only female in the street, I had no choice but to assume it was for me. A couple of men started mumbling incoherently while looking at me, I don't think I'd be able to stomach what they are truly saying. Nor did I want to stick around and find out. Hyungsik momentarily made eye contact with me before narrowing the drunk men sitting on the ground.
"Ignore them," he warned before continuing on.
I simply nodded and caught up to his walking pace. Things behind us got worse as the men started yelling and resorted to throwing bottles at Hyungsik and I. At this point, I was so tempted to whip my gun put and fire a warning shot. Hyunsik must have read my mind, and he glared at me from the corner of his eye. Grumbling under my breath, I abandoned the thoughts and continued to walk.
Once we lost the damned drunkards, we were greeted by a bright neon sign, the club's name illuminated in large pink letters. Luckily, there was no line behind the velvet rope, so Hyungsik and I walked straight up to the bouncer. Without saying anything, the man looked at us with a raised eyebrow and a stare of doubt, even after when we showed him identification. Slightly annoyed, I crossed my arms over my chest and returned an equally harsher glare.
"Look man, can you just let us in?" Hyungsik huffed, his impatience emerging. "Or would you like a conversation with Geun?"
One of my eyebrows raised skywards as the burly man began to shake in his shoes. It was almost as if the name struck fear into any poor soul who had the absolute displeasure to hear it. Without a speck of hesitation, the bouncer stepped aside, gesturing for us to go inside.
Hyungsik went in first and I followed. Due to a large number of people crowding the floor, I was cautious about not losing sight of the feverish crowd around us. Luckily it was easy to spot him because of his tall stature, though it would be difficult for him to find me- I'm too short for safety. Somehow, I managed to go along with him to the bar. The two of us occupied a pair of empty seats, waiting to be addressed by the bartender working behind the counter. I could only assume that he was Geun, judging by how intense Hyungsik's gaze was.
The man finally turned around, and a look of shock washed over his face.
"Hyungsik-Ssi, I wasn't expecting a visit from you."
"Listen, I wouldn't be here if I didn't need to be," Hyungsik hissed.
I was shocked by my friend's sudden hostility, utterly in disbelief that he was capable of expressing such strong animosity.
"I suppose you're with him, girl?" he asked, turning towards me.
"And if I am?" I shot back, narrowing my eyes towards him.Geun pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head afterward. Was he surrendering? He caught the attention of another female working behind the counter, asking her to handle the counter. Geun untied his black apron and began to leave the bar. Hyungsik called out to him, asking where he was going.
"If you want to talk, then follow me. Otherwise, you can forget it."
Shortly after, Hyungsik and I found ourselves in Geun's office sitting on the couch with several cups of coffee in front of us. Oddly, I felt singled out, as Hyungsik and Geun were locked in an intense staring contest, neither side letting up on their harsh glares. I was under the impression that this meeting would be more productive, in the sense that we would be able to get information about Taehyung's, or in this case, Vantae's movements through the city. According to Hyungsik, Geun had eyes and ears all over the city, he would be able to tell us anything about his whereabouts, and where he was currently living. Unfortunately, it seemed that we were going nowhere.
As I took a sip from the oddly bitter coffee, my eyebrow began to twitch in annoyance.
"Can we please discuss what we need to discuss instead of you two admiring each other's faces?!" I snapped.
Thankfully, my outburst snapped the two out of their trance and the discussion finally began.
"What do you want to know?" Geun grumbled, downing the last sip of his hot beverage.
"Vantae's whereabouts."
I watched unimpressed as Geun began to choke on his drink, almost in shock after listening to what I said.
"Are you crazy?! That man has killed more people than me! Why the fuck are you trying to find him?!"
"That's for us to worry about, all we need is the information," Hyungsik huffed.Geun stared at us incredulously, he was in utter disbelief after learning we were going to stop at nothing to find him. Thankfully, the longer we stared at him, it persuaded him to give in to our requests, he was hesitant at first, but we got what we needed in the end. Let's just hope his information is reliable and result prone.
