Chapter 11
🌹🌹🌹Holding my arms out like a bird, I easily balanced on the roof’s edge, slowly and carefully putting on foot in front of the other. Tilting my head back, I took in a big breath of the cold, night-time breeze and sighed softly in freedom. Just below the soles of my boots hung over thirty stories worth of air. One wrong slip or one step of hesitance, and I could say goodbye to ever finding Taehyung and seeing my sisters again. After sitting idle for almost six months, my muscles ached for stimulation and craved an energetic heat. When I jumped onto my first roof, it felt like heaven to finally stretch and exercise my body in the best way I know. I had forgotten how exhilarating it was to run around the city and explore its many different pathways. Feeling the cool breeze and fresh air hit my face was true and pure freedom.
Reaching the corner of the roof, I pulled my mask down and took a deep breath to calm my racing heart within my throat. Spinnin on the heel of my shoe, I faced the streetlight lit roads below and took a seat on the ledge. I allowed my feet to dangle back and forth, as if I was sitting on a swing.
Things have been oddly quiet over the past couple of days, not much has happened ever since we arrived in Daegu. Hyungsik and I haven’t heard from Geun yet and we probably won’t for a couple more days. I could only assume that the guy wanted to be very throughout with his intel. It was good to know that he didn’t want to give us any false leads knowing what Hyungsik and I were capable of.
The girls have also informed me that Namjoon is still trying to locate me, but has proved to be unsuccessful. It was all thanks to Cardinal’s powerful authority over our shared network. He trumped their measly system, preventing them from finding me. I could only assume that MaeLin programmed him to block the tech team from accessing my location, especially after everything that’s happened between my brother and I. Right now, I was as elusive as the Cheshire Cat itself and I intend to stay that way for a good while. However, I felt bad for the boys; they were taking the heat from my brother and they don’t deserve that.
Aside from all the mishaps back home, I’ve just been getting back into the feel of being an information runner, partaking in small jobs here and there for the girls and Hyungsik. Then again, I was still waiting for that one big job that would get me back into the swing of things completely. It was as if Hyungsik heard my prayers as he made himself known through my earpiece.
“How’s the city kiddo?”
I will admit that Daegu had some beautiful sight-seeing spots that left a strong first impression on me. However, with how much time I’ve spent in Incheon, my heart will always belong to that city. Although, I wouldn’t mind returning here for a vacation some time in the future.
“Listen, I have a mission for you. One of Robyn’s men is taking a leisurely stroll nearby. Think you can wipe him off the map?”
Standing up on the sky-high ledge and brushing my pants off, I looked towards the city skyline as I saw a holographic beacon of red light rise into the air. Watching carefully, the beacon was definitely moving, however, it was at a jerkish and jagged way. It was almost as if the target was stumbling like a drunk, which was then confirmed by Hyungsik. Fortunately, this only made my job a lot easier, knowing that I wouldn’t have to sneak into any buildings and bypass security. All I had to do was intercept my target’s path and go in for the kill, quick and easy.
“Perfect. Try and make use of the hook shot I gave you. It’ll make getting around easier,” Hyungsik said. “I’ll monitor the grid in the meantime.”
Taking Hyungsik up on his offer to use his newest addition to his collection, I raised my arm and squeezed my palm. Before I knew it, a silver spear headshot from the gauntlet enclosed around my wrist and embedded itself in the closest building corner. With a strong plasma rope supporting my weight, I jumped off the ledge and swung through the air. Just feeling the wind in my face reminded me of the days where I would swing from tree branch to tree branch when I was little. Squeezing my hand once again, I pulled the spear head back into the gauntlet and I landed on the roof with a roll. The hook shot works well, far better than I expected. Continuing on with my mission, I chased after the target, using walkways and rooftops as my pathway.
Once I caught up to my target, I continued walking along a roof ledge to observe Bradley Pitts, who continued to walk like nothing was wrong. He was constantly stumbling over his own feet, unaware that I was stalking him with the intention of cutting off his lifeline. I hated to do this to the poor guy when he was in such a state but he was associated with a dangerous man and even sponsored him for a few years. Instead of choosing the right road, he went down the wrong one and wasted his own money on a man who had his head too far up his rear end. If only he had contributed to society.
Moving a little faster, I gained a few feet in front of Bradley before jumping down into the alleyway. Bradley screamed in surprise, falling back onto his backside and staring at me with wide eyes. He most likely wasn’t expecting a visit from the Cheshire Cat of Crimson. Standing up straight, I returned his gaze and drew the gun hanging from my belt before pointing it straight at him.
“Wait-!” he exclaimed but couldn’t finish.
His body fell back onto the pavement but I froze- I didn’t pull the trigger, it wasn’t me who put a bullet in his head. I looked around frantically, trying to find the person guilty of stealing my kill.
Before I could find the guilty party, I suddenly felt something hit my back and ricochet to the nearest wall. Raising my eyebrows, I looked towards the new bullethole making itself known in the bricks. What was odd was that I could see the bullet sticking out. Turning around completely, I looked towards the many buildings behind me, trying to find the sniper.
“Hyungsik, there’s a sniper somewhere,” I informed him.
“Damn! He moves quickly!” Hyungsik exclaimed. “I lost him.”
