Jack stopped by the liquor store from yesterday to pick up a few things. Jack's idea for tonight was to have a BBQ and invite people over from the bonfire last night. I was thrilled because it gave me a reason to call Mason.
While I was waiting near the front of the store, I noticed a shelf of cell phones behind the counter.
"Hey, what's up with the phones?" I asked the cashier, pointing behind him.
He looked over his shoulder lazily as if he had to see what I was talking about before he knew the answer.
"You pay for the phone up front and its preloaded with minutes and stuff." His answer was just as bored as his face.
"Like a burner? I thought that was something made up for crappy action movies?"
"Nah, they're real. But you can reload it instead of just throwing it away." He shrugged.
"Can I get two?" I dug around my purse for my wallet as he pulled two from wall behind him.
I paid for the phones and waited while Jack finished paying for our booze haul. The cashier didn't bat an eye at the large amount of alcohol. I don't know if he remembered us from yesterday but if he did, he didn't let on. I wondered if he actually looked at the whole ID or just the birthdate printed on it.
As Jack and I left the store, he asked what I had in the bag.
"Burner phones." I grinned wildly. I felt so sneaky, like a professional run-away.
"Look at you, James Bond." He nodded impressed.
We unwrapped our phones and activated them in the car. After exchanging numbers and taking pictures for the contact info, we made our way home to call our new friends.
"Yeah, everyone is invited. Call around. Let's make it big." Jack was on the phone with Kayla, then called a few other people he got numbers from. Mostly girls.
I snuck off to my room to call Mason. He answered after three rings while I chewed my thumbnail.
"Hello?" He answered, sounding busy. I could picture the phone pressed between his shoulder and ear. I don't know why that made me smile.
"Hey, you busy?"
"For you, Stella, never." I heard something in the background shuffle and all of a sudden, his voice was clearer. "What do I owe the pleasure of hearing your angel voice?"
"So cheesy." I giggle. "Were having a bonfire tonight. Was calling to see if maybe you wanted to come by?"
"I'll be there, boombox and trench coat in hand."
"Maybe leave that stuff at home." I scrunch up my nose. "The house has built in speakers and it's, like, ninety degrees out."
"Good point. How about just a bottle of the lady's favorite?"
"Perfect. I like anything fruity."
I gave Mason the address and told him to invite anyone he likes. To which he of course responded, "Hey, I heard about this killer party tonight. You wanna come with?"
"Ha-ha, very funny. See you at 8:00?"
"Wouldn't miss it."
I hung up and yelled for Jack to come upstairs.
"What's up Miss Maddie?" He said before he even got to my door.
"Can you help me pick out my outfit for tonight?"
"I have one in mind already. Where is that shirt, the black one, with the knot in it?"
"You don't think that's too much skin?" I touched the spot above my belly button.
