Emotions Take Over
”Morning man.” Was the first thing Bradley heard when he awoke from his deep sleep. Bradley groaned and looked to his left, where Justin sat with puffy red cheeks and watery eyes. Bradley was confused about Justin’s appearance and sat up straight in his bed.
“What’s wrong bro?” Bradley asked Justin and he fumbled with his fingers in his lap.
“You had a heart attack again Brad.” Justin finally looked Bradley in the eye and Brad looked down.
“Brendan told us that you’ve had one before this.” Brad looked up in shock and turned his face towards Justin.
“What?”
“Brad, tell me the truth.”
“He promised not to tell.” Bradley looked down shamefully at his hands. Justin stood up from his chair in astonishment. Justin clenched his fists and then unclenched them.
“You actually think that he would keep something this serious to himself! Are you stupid?” Justin was angry, but he was also hurt. He couldn’t believe that Bradley would keep something this serious to himself.
“Why didn’t you tell your parents?”
“I couldn’t tell them! They would be so worried and then there would be more trouble. I have caused enough trouble for my family and that was the last straw. My mother lost her sister, because of….” Brad pressed his lips together, trying to keep himself from finishing that sentence. Justin could not find out, he would probably never want to see him and Bradley wasn’t sure how much his poor heart could take, before it broke completely.
“What is it Brad?” Justin looked curiously at Bradley and he sat down on the edge of his bed. Brad couldn’t look Justin in the eye; it was so hard lying to him. Especially since that’s why he liked Brad as a friend…because he was so brutally honest. Brad couldn’t stop the sarcastic laughter that escaped from his mouth and he lied back down on his bed.
“It happened one time and he took me to the hospital. Brendan had just turned 18 so he lied and said that he was my legal guardian.” Brad told Justin and he listened carefully.
“Why did it happen Brad, please tell me. You can trust me.” Brad almost cried at the confession. Bradley felt like a major hypocrite, meanwhile Justin was putting himself out there and being honest with him, Bradley was lying to Justin and that just tore a piece of Brad’s heart off.
“I can’t swim and some bully threw me in the harbor. It’s no big deal.” Bradley tried to shrug it off, but Justin saw right through his act. Justin was pissed. Somebody had actually dared to throw a person in the water who couldn’t swim, then left them to drown? Those assholes.
Justin took a deep breath and tried to say the next sentence sincerely. He was a little hurt by saying the sentence, since he had been such an asshole about that subject. He had always been a major jerk when it came to people who were different than him and his crew. That’s why he had such a hard time dealing with this.
“I know why that guy pushed you in.” And that’s when Bradley snapped his head around to stare at Justin with such fear in his eyes that it hurt Justin. He hated seeing Brad fear him; he didn’t want him to have that reaction on Bradley. He wanted a whole other reaction. He wanted lust, love and adoration. Justin had accepted his thoughts and decided to check it out further when he had time. He wanted to know why he was feeling this way, he wanted to know why he was thinking like this and why he had mental images of Bradley naked running through his mind once in a while.
