A/N: Inspired by the song "Forever" by Lewis Capaldi. Get ya tissues out x -A.

Caught me off guard, I wish that I'd been sober
"Oh God" was Toby's first thought when we walked into that club. He hadn't been expecting to see her at all. He knew he wouldn't be able to talk to her like this. He had been out at another bar before coming here and was already a little tipsy.

Still, here we are, back in Hanover 99
Just like old times all over
6 months ago, Spencer and Toby broke up.

Only now Toby had finally been able to man up enough to back to all the places they'd been to together. One of both their favourite places was a club a few towns over called Hanover 99. The club itself was small, intimate, dark apart from the exit safety lights. Luck wasn't on his side tonight though apparently because as soon as he walked in, he knew she was there too.

Under the exit lights as beautiful as ever
She was as stunning as she'd always been, dancing on a table with Hanna and Aria, her perfect, joy-filled face lit up by the green emergency exit sign.

I really wish that I dressed up a little better.
Toby looked down, he was in casual jeans and a button up. God, no wonder Spencer broke up with him, he thought. Even his outfit couldn't keep up with hers. She was wearing a tight, short black dress that really suited her, she looked simply incredible.

No regrets is what we said
We can't go back again
They'd ended things pretty amicably. There hadn't been screaming or shouting or crying (at least not in front of each other). Spencer had said that things were going different ways for them and Toby agreed. They decided that breaking up now would save worse heartbreak further down the line.

Darling, nobody said that it would last forever
Technically, that was a bit of a lie. Pretty much everything thought they'd be together in the long run but no one had every really told them to fight for each other after they broke up.

That doesn't mean we didn't try to get there
The break-up wasn't a flash decision, they'd both fought to keep it on track before they had the dreaded conversation. One thing that always comforted Toby is that he knew they'd tried and no one could say they didn't.

I never said that we would die together
That doesn't mean it was a lie
Okay so they weren't going to grow old together but that didn't mean their relationship was a waste. They'd been there for each other at the very worst moments and that was always going to mean something, whether they were together or not.

Head in my hands, cold coffee on the table
That's how it had been when she left for the last time. Toby had made them coffee so that he had something, anything else to focus on the fact he knew what was coming. She'd asked to "talk" but he'd known for a long time that this was going to be the book closing. After she'd gone he sat at the table and sobbed until the coffee was stone cold.

Wish you the best, I would if I was able. Morning light, it stings a little.
He still loved her so much, so much that he wanted her to be happy, however that was achieved but he knew actually telling her that would kill him. Every morning he'd woken up without her next to him had hurt him a little more. It was like every time was another punch in the stomach and he never got used to the pain.

Out of my mind, I don't remember calling
Had too much tonic wine, sometimes it does the talking
That had happened a few times, the way tonight was going in the club, Toby felt like it could potentially happen again. The classic drunk phone call to your ex. Spencer had never brought them up but he'd seen on his call logs that he'd been on the phone to her for half an hour the night before and from the dry, burning feeling in his throat he was pretty sure they always ended with him crying.

Hope you know I wish you all the love you're looking for.
She knew. She knew that although it would break him to see her with someone else that he would accept it, if it meant that she was happy.

They'll never take those long summer days
When love was untamed
They'd had 5 whole beautiful, long summers together. Their love back then had known no bounds. The only thing in the entire world had been the two of them. And it had been limitless, until it wasn't.

Two burning hearts are dared to break
Maybe it had been inevitable. Maybe they were never really meant to be. That was just something Toby would have to learn to be okay with.

Remember, nobody said that it would last forever.
