Time seemed to have frozen as I stared into Cain's eyes. I don't know how long I spent staring at his dark eyes and clenched jaw. I noticed the vein on his temples throb in contest. I was waiting for the first blow when Mr. Solomon's voice rang out.

"CAIN!" He boomed.

Cain didn't flinch. His muscles didn't even twitch as the older man thundered. I was truly a dead man.

Then, Cain surprised me again. He huffed hard in my face, features remaining stone. I breathed in the spicy scent of pine and what I decided was Cain's very own fragrance. The depth of his smell sent butterflies to my stomach. I couldn't help but inhale again. Cain backed up and I internally longed for his scent to invade my personal space. The veins in Cain's neck bulged and his nostrils flared. He was upset. But was it at me? I didn't have time to ponder it as Mr. Solomon's voice boomed again.

"David. Leave us."

Mr. Solomon didn't have to tell my twice. I glanced at Cain once more, relieved I was saved from an early death. Cain's eyes were less dark now; their warm glimmer seemed to have returned. I turned away and shook my head. My eyes were playing tricks on me.

The rest of the day flew by. I couldn't focus on anything because I was still pondering my interaction with Cain. The intensity of the moment I shared still thrummed in the back of my mind. What did Cain want?

At lunch, Jamie asked why I didn't get anything to eat and I told her I wasn't hungry. Jamie was really emotional and overprotective. I didn't want her going up against Cain.

After bidding Jamie farewell, I headed to my next class. The hallways bustled with students and I struggled to make my way to the class. The bell rung loudly and I groaned.

"Great, now I'm late"

I decided that since I was late I might as well use the restroom. The hallways that were once occupied where eerily quiet. I walked to the bathroom, the sound of my shoes tapping against the linoleum echoed down the hallways. I pushed open the bathroom door and made my way to a urinal, quickly relieving myself.

I flushed and went over to the sink, washing my heads before fixing my hair.

Then, the bathroom door swung open and I turned to see the last person I expected to come across.

Cain.

My heart started to pump in my ears again and my breathing became sporadic. I was alone and Cain was a mere five feet away. There were no teachers to save me. Cain had me with unrestricted access and only God knew what plans he had for me.

"Hey-uh-Cain," I stuttered. "What are you doing?"

Cain only stared, his honey eyes dark. His chest rose and fall evenly. The expression on his handsome face was unreadable. I couldn't see anger but there was no friendliness in his stare.

I was nearly vibrating with anxiety. Tears stung the corner of my eyes but I was too paralyzed with fear to let them spill. The man that stood in front of me could snap me in half and I was too sure of my impending downfall to waste anymore energy stressing. I struggled to even my breathing, as I waited for Cain to make his move.

Cain stepped forward. I never knew Cain as hesitant, only as the confident, surefooted athlete. His persona was said to make even the most gorgeous girls swoon.

But he approached me like I was a foreign object. Cain's pine laden sent flitted across my nose and I inhaled again. The familiar burn of attraction started in my stomach and I struggled a to get air out. Cain continued until he was right in front of me. He inhaled deeply. A deep rumbling broke the silence.

"Did that noise come from him?"

Cain's voice interrupted my thoughts. A deep bass that vibrated my insides.

"What's your name?" He spoke though he sounded strained, as if he was forced to speak.

I stared. His eyes were dark but had retained their honey glint. His strong jaw was held as he awaited my answer. I took in the intensity of his glare.

"David." I managed to get out breathlessly. "David Stone."

Cain's eyes didn't release my gaze. He took a step forward and I took a step back. As he took another, I continued until we were locked in a dance.

"Where are you going" He rumbled.

I couldn't speak as I continued backing up until my back bumped against the wall. The events from earlier today flashed through my mind. There was no escape now as I was nearly face to face-well face to chest with Cain. I looked up, lightheaded from the frenzy of what was unfolding before me. I could barely grasp onto reality as Cain stood before, the vein in his temple bulging.

Suddenly, the bathroom door opened. Cain's eyes didn't move from my face but I turned to see who would witness my death. I recognized the intruder instantly.

Alexander Bridges. Cain's co-captain and best friend. An accomplice. My head was pounding. I didn't know what to make of this.

"Cain. What's going on man?" Alexander questioned. Cain didn't answer, his attention was still focused on me. My eyes flashed between Alexander and Cain, silently pleading for help. Alexander's eyes were weary as he continued to coax Cain but his words fell on deaf ears. Cain raised his hand, grabbing my chin. I could only let him because I knew any resistance was futile. Besides, maybe if he had his way with me, the beating would be over quicker.

My eyes flashed to the door and I noticed Alexander's mouth moving but I couldn't hear him over the ringing that had began in my ears. My eyes fluttered back to Cain's whose honey eyes had once again darkened. My vision blurred and I could only think that this truly was it.

"I'm not going to hurt him."

That was the last thing I heard before everything went dark.
