"Be sure to check out the updated ending of Chapter Twenty-One. Chao is back ladies and gents and theys "
"Well, isn't this nice?" Deanna began. "No more prying eyes and listening ears."
"You must appreciate having a moment to yourselves." She finished with a smile.
"Great. Another sociopath."
Neither Cain nor I spoke. But neither did Deanna and as the silence passed I came to realize that this was her game. Discomfort.
So I spoke.
"It's an adjustment, yea." I said fully but lost my chutzpah as my voice tore through the silence and Deanna's glare grew more malevolent.
"That's fantastic." She retorted. She look to Cain and I turned to watch their exchange.
"And you Cain?"
I noticed Cain's eyes slowly swirl to black but there remained a hint of gold. "He's trying to restrain himself."
"Thing's are fine."
"Good to hear it. Have you two prepared for his shift?" I felt Cain stiffen. Literally, it was as if him clenching himself was pulling me into his fold. I felt uneasy. Cain's reactions. And what "shift".
I let my confusion show on my face, to Deanna's pleasure. "Oh my word," She began. "You haven't told the boy he has to turn? I'll have to give word to Lysander and.."
"There's no need to contact Elder Lysander. The date is set." Cain replied, in a low, almost threatening bass. "Before the enthronement, I'm expected to take him." Cain looked to me and his eyes were a vulnerable yellow, not radiant honey but a tortured yellow tint. I glanced to see Deanna smiling and nodding.
"TAKE ME? ENTHRONEMENT? SHIFT?"
"Um?" Was the last word I mumbled before everything went black.
