A steady downpour of rain fell from a cloudy, grey sky. Peter and MJ sat side by side on a bench underneath the bus shelter. They had ran there, dragging their school bags behind them just as the rain had turned from a slight drizzle to relentless bucketing down from above. They were both soaking wet: the rain jacket that Aunt May had provided for Peter barely stood a chance against the sudden, unexpected downpour. His hair was flattened against his head and water dripped down the back of his neck, finding its way under his clothes. The only sounds to be heard were passing busses and cars, accompanied by the pitter-patter falling of the rain on pavement and wailing of the wind. Unsurprisingly, MJ was still reading her book with her face as close as it could get to the pages without touching them, her dark hair hanging in her eyes. The wind whipping through the pages didn't seem to faze her but Peter could see her trying to block the droplets that threatened to soak her page.
"Hey", he said, "Do you want to borrow my umbrella?" As always, now with Mr Stark on his case as well as his Aunt, Peter was prepared for anything and always had at least one umbrella with him at all times. She looked up from her book and swept the hair out of her brown eyes, she gave him one of her rare smiles, "Are you sure?" He nodded and handed over the umbrella. "Thanks." She attempted to open it but failed and ended up catching the clasp on her jumper sleeve. "Here let me help." He leaned over and took her hands in his, they were warm despite the bitter cold around them. Slowly he eased the fabric out and unhooked her from the handle. Then he tried opening the umbrella. That was a mistake. The wind caught it and turned it inside out, pulling it out of his hands and whisking it away down the street. MJ started cracking up, seeing the dismayed expression on his face. He was about to go after it but she touched his arm. "Don't bother, you'll never catch up with it anyway." "But Mr Sta- I mean, Aunt May will be mad that I lost it" Peter had to be careful, even though MJ was his second-closest friend, she still didn't know that he was Spider-Man and how close he was with Tony Stark. And he wasn't planning on telling her anytime soon. The less people knew, the better.
"Oh well, you can always get another one", she said, her breath visible in the air like smoke, their faces were so close that he could feel it on his face, "Thanks though, its the thought that counts." She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. Warmth spread through his body from where she touched him and sparks flew around inside his head. He was so surprised that he didn't know what to do. What were you even supposed to do? She pulled away and turned towards the road where a vehicle approached through the rain, windscreen wipers flailing desperately. "That's my bus." She stood up and grabbed her bag from the bench. "See you tomorrow, Pete." Speechless, he watched as she ran through the downpour, her hair flying around her face and waited as the bus stopped at the curb, its wheels splashing through the puddles. She stepped on and the doors closed behind her. Silently, he watched the bus pull away and continue down the road before it was consumed by the rain and he was left sitting alone with the storm.
