C O U R T N E Y

"Miss Miller," Shayne called from the front of the classroom, over halfway into class, running his hand over his neck, "can you come up here for a moment please?"

The rest of the class, who was working on the packet, glanced up, this apparently being more interesting than chemical equations.

I smiled quietly to myself, sliding out of my desk and slowly making my to the front of the classroom, making sure not to trip over my own feet, bringing my pen along with me.

Once I had reached his desk, he pointed to a worksheet sitting on his desk.

I rested my elbows on his desk, supporting myself as I leaned on the wood to look over the paper.

He placed his hand on my back gently, his voice quiet.

"This is a worksheet that I designed for you. They're about the same as everyone else's work, I just broke it down so you'll comprehend the material easier. Sound good, duchess?" His eyes smiled gently at me before glancing down at the paper, directing for me to look at the paper.

Uncapping my pen, he scrawled a note in the margins:

You look cute today :)

I smiled, slightly perplexed. Taking the pen, I wrote back:

Couldn't you have waited until after class to tell me?

Shayne shook his head slightly, pouting.

We're doing things after class.

I raised my eyebrow, curious.

Things?

He smirked, shaking his head again.

You'll see.

I grinned, taking my pen back.

"So, you see, that if you list these chemical compounds first, then it changes the meaning. For example, C6 H12 O2 is glucose because they're in that specific order," Shayne told me softly, pretending that we weren't just flirting over paper.

I nodded, glancing over the chemical compounds.

"You can go back to your seat now, and finish working on the rest of these," he told me softly, rubbing my shoulder gently before letting me go, handing me the paper.

I nodded, walking back to my desk. Charlotte stuck her leg out, though, in an attempt to trip me, but I hopped over it, watching her sneer.

Slipping back into my seat, I glanced over the problems before realizing, with a jolt, oh my God, the notes! People could see the notes! Glancing back at the margins, I noticed that there was no ink anywhere on the paper.

Sneaking a look to the front of the room, Shayne made eye contact with me, tapping the side of his head.

I sighed to myself in relief, before glancing over the problems. They weren't as difficult looking as the others, but they were essentially the same thing as the packet.

After I had completed the first few problems, the bell rang. I pretended to finish the problem I was currently on before everyone had left the room.

Once just Shayne and I were left, I glanced up at him with a smile.

"Hi, duchess," he greeted me, sliding into the seat in front of me.

We've been, I suppose, flirting, for about a week now. I wasn't expecting him to be so gentle. The most daring he's done is caress my thigh absentmindedly or kiss my temple.

"Hi," I said softly, reaching my hand out to grab his. He complied, running his thumb gently over my skin.

Shayne held a finger quickly before standing up and heading to the door. Just as he was about to flip the lock, there was a loud knock at the door.

He shrugged at me before opening it several inches and stepping into the hallway, closing the door behind him.

S H A Y N E

Ms Ren. That tragic secretary.

"Hello, Sir," she greeted me, a silk layer over her voice.

"Hi," I replied brusquely.

"Do you perhaps, remember a meeting we held at the end of September with that Miller girl and Mrs Salzar?" she quirked her eyebrow at me, her teeth digging into her lip.

"Yes, and- please stop," I frowned, my voice flat.

She let go of her lip and dropped the tone, but her eyes became daggers, and I swear, she would have punched me if she wasn't clearly infatuated.

"Great. Mrs Salzar has decided to continue the meeting now, as she knows about your after school tutoring with that Miller girl," she reported, glancing at her nails boredly.

"She has a name, for God's sake," I muttered to myself.

"Well?"

"Well what?"

"Aren't you coming?"

Not to you, I thought to myself. "Uh, yeah, I'll be a second."

Pulling myself back into the classroom, Courtney turned around to face me.

"Remember that meeting awhile back with Salzar?" She nodded. "Apparently, we're continuing that now, and we need you," I finished, pointing at her.

She slid out of her seat, tentatively making her way towards me. An expression filled with anxiety painted her features. I placed my hand on her shoulder comfortingly, looking at her in the eyes.

"It's going to be fine, duchess," I murmured, grazing my thumb over her cheek gently. "Besides, we haven't done anything."

She nodded, slightly reassured.

Making sure Ms Ren wasn't looking, I pressed a quick kiss against her temple before smiling down at her and pulling open the door.

Ms Ren sighed, crossing her arms in annoyance as I lightly pushed Courtney in front of me as we made our way down the stairs to the office to the dreaded meeting.
