You'd think a private school would have enough money to afford good lunches, but it seemed like they were still intent on upgrading every aspect of the school except the cafeteria food. No matter how hungry I could be, the feeling faded almost instantly after seeing whatever was on the menu for the day. Some days I could force myself to choke part of it down, but it wasn't often. Olivia and Sarah always packed extra for Noah and me to scrounge through like raccoons, thankfully.
We always sat at the same table in the corner, the four of us. It had been the same table since freshman year, except for a brief two-month period last year when Jake and his friends felt like being assholes because I'd ratted him out to our mom for drinking because he'd ratted me out for drinking first, and then we'd both gotten grounded for two months. I don't think we spoke a word to each other that entire time.
Olivia wasn't here today. And neither was Sarah- I think she had the flu, actually. So Noah and I had to sit and stare at the barely edible monstrosity sitting on our lunch trays, unsure of whether we should even bother with trying to eat it.
It had no smell, which actually made it worse to think about. More mysterious.
Noah groans, falling back in his seat. "I can't do this today."
"I think I've got a granola bar in my bag," I tell him. "D'you wanna split it?"
"What kind is it?"
"Dunno," I mumble, grabbing the heavy satchel off of one of the empty chairs, "if I find it, I'll let you know."
He just chuckles sorely. "Okay."
But before I can locate it, Charlotte's walking up to our table and taking a seat in one of the empty chairs.
Noah and I are quick to exchange glances, both of us clearly not in the mood for her today.
He's off the hook, though, which becomes obvious when she fixes her gaze on me, a patronizing smile on her face. "Tutoring, huh?"
I can feel my face freeze. "W- what?"
How would she know about that?
"For chemistry? Oh, don't look so shocked, I know all about that."
I glance at Noah, and I have a feeling my panic is reflected almost perfectly in his expression.
"Your boyfriend left his laptop open when he went to go talk to Miss Paisley earlier," she explains, still grinning.
I don't say anything, not really knowing what she means. I can feel my heart rate rising, though. Like, a lot.
"Don't tell me you don't know who I'm talking about!" she exclaims, mocking surprise, before giggling vindictively.
I do. I have every idea. Which surprises me.
"He really cares about you," Charlotte keeps going, before whipping her phone out, still talking while she pulls something up in her gallery. "You wanna read the email he sent your mommy?"
"What is your problem?" Noah pipes up, aware of how I'm at a loss for words.
She raises her eyebrows innocently, before flipping her phone screen to face me.
I don't want to give in and read it, but I'm curious to know what he said. Especially since Charlotte had read it.
I can't help myself, so I lean forward, my eyes scanning quickly across the lines of the photographed email in case she decided to be even more of a bitch and pull it away. She doesn't- right away, anyway- which is shocking.
Mrs Miller,
I am Courtney's chemistry teacher, and I wanted to let you know that she has been having some difficulties in my class. I have had several discussions with her about this, and we have realized that after school tutoring would be the best solution for her. Chemistry is a difficult subject, and she is a bright student, so this is not something you should worry about. If you want to discuss this further-
