It was just Damien. Damien was standing at the door, a small smirk on his face.

My eyes were still wide, startled by the sudden interruption. My hands had instinctively gone to grip Shayne's flannel collar, the soft fabric being clenched tightly in my fists.

"Damien," Shayne sighed, in either relief or exasperation, I'm not sure. "Don't do that."

"Sorry, Shayne, sorry princess," Damien apologized, shrugging. "But, like, it is my house, and I didn't know any way I could've come inside without scaring you two."

Shayne rolled his eyes playfully at his words before turning his attention back to me.

"Duchess, you're choking me," Shayne raised an eyebrow, glancing down at his collar, the material still tightly being held by me.

"S-sorry," I apologized, gently releasing my grip.

"It's fine, doll," he told me, planting a soft kiss on the top of my head.

I mumbled incohorently, nuzzling my face into the crook of his neck, feeling his arm move up to wrap around my back so I wouldn't slide off of his lap onto the floor.

Damien scratched the back of his neck awkwardly before shutting the back door as quietly as he could, then commencing his slow walk to his room as to not disturb us.

His flannel was soft against the bare skin of my arms and my neck, and I wanted to bury myself in it.

The way his arms were wrapped protectively around me was comforting. At school, we were always seperated by the law and age gap. But here, in Damien's kitchen, it was like a haven, a place for us to be how we wanted to be. And how I wanted to be was held in his arms, breathing in his scent.

"You're quiet, babydoll," he commented, his voice slightly raspy from lack of conversing.

I shrugged gently.

"You tired?" he asked quietly.

"Yeah," I mumbled.

"Do you want to go back to sleep on your bed?"

"No," I protested, "you won't be with me then. Besides, I sleep better with you."

"Me too," he murmured. "Then fall asleep here, on my lap, and I'll see you when you wake up."

"Okay," I was too tired to argue that we could use the guest bedroom where we could both sleep, so I let him rock me into a calm, quiet blissful place called dream land.

When I woke up, I was in a different chair, my head resting on my arms on the table, Shayne diagonal from me at the table. Damien was across from me, and Kari was in the seat opposite Shayne.

We all had drinks in front of us, Shayne, a water, Damien, tea, Kari, juice, and an already opened and presumably half empty La Croix for myself as to not raise suspicion.

A small smile formed on my lips as I realized the drink of choice from Damien sitting by my elbow on the table. Shayne could tell I was awake, but he pretended not to due to Kari's presence. He made eye contact with me, his blue orbs softening to see my waking up state.

I smiled softly at him. My face was only facing in his direction, so only Shayne was able to tell that I was awake.

"Not to be creepy, Mr T, but the way you're staring at my sleeping sister is weird," a random voice that I immediately recognized as Brad's annoucned.
