55 Park

C O U R T N E Y

One of the best parts of finally being out of school was that I could go places with Shayne. We could be in public together. We could go shopping together. We could spend time together.

But we were still being wary, just in case.

It was already mid-July. Shayne and I had spent nearly ever day together. Usually he and I would just spend time at his house, so used to being limited there. However, my mom had made it almost a priority to make him feel welcome- especially after the comments my grandmother had made however long ago. That resulted in her extending dinner invitations to him almost every week.

For some reason, she wasn't at all surprised that I had his number.

Currently, the two of us were sitting in his car outside of a Panda Express. We hadn't ordered food from there, but the coffee shop we had visited had too many people for our liking.

Shayne was stirring his drink with the little brown straw the barista had given him, blowing on the surface lightly to help it cool off.

I had ordered a hot chocolate, in the mood for something sweet.

He eyed me. "Are you ever going to try coffee?" There was a playful hint to his voice as he bought his styrofoam cup in his grasp to his lips, his other hand resting on my knee.

"Not today," I said simply, feeling the corners of my lips tug upwards vaguely in response to his mood.

"What about tomorrow?"

I shrugged, taking a sip of my own drink before immediately pulling it away from my mouth with a gasp.

He chuckled, squeezing my leg gently. "It's still hot, princess."

"I know that," I mumbled, hoping the burning feeling in my mouth would go away.

"You okay?" he checked, swiping his tongue across his bottom lip.

"My mouth hurts," I mumbled childishly, placing my cup in the holder in the center console.

"Want me to kiss it to make it feel better?" Shayne asked cheekily.

I blushed, slapping his arm playfully. He chuckled, setting his coffee down to start the car. "You're too cute," he mumbled, shaking his head. My face grew another shade darker.

"Where are we going?" I changed the subject, gazing out of the window as he pulled out of the parking lot.

"Where would you like to go?" Shayne hummed, his hand still grasping my leg.

"Is there a park near here?" I inquired, my eyes looking over at him almost expectantly. Shayne noticed my gaze, and he made eye contact with me before refocusing on the road.

I watched as a smirk crawled across his lips. "There's that park you were supposedly running in when you went to apologize to me."

My jaw dropped. "How'd you know about that?"

"Damien told me."
