"One of those things is that Thomas almost died and it was my fault."
"What?!" Patton, Logan, and Roman cried out in unison.
I found it impossible to meet their piercing gazes and instead I turned to Deceit who had a wild grin on his face. This was what he wanted me to do all along. Get the other sides to hate me so I would have a reason to go back to him. Ever since they day I left the Dark Sides trapped in that awful place while I joined the others.

Fifteen Years Ago
"Remus! Remus, what's wrong with Deceit?" I called out to the dark green trait. I rushed over to him as the man gave me a shrug.
"I dunno, Virge," he replied before fading into a mold colored mist.
I choked at the awful rotting smell that it left behind and swatted it away. I turned around and stared sadly at the house that I had grown up in.
It was so strange too. Deceit had been acting like his usual lying and traitorous self when he fell to the floor, clutching his head. I had tried to ask him if he was alright, but he shoved me away. His eyes had turned a bright yellow, making them look like miniature suns.
The next thing I knew, Remus placed a hand on my shoulder, not his hand unfortunately, and told me to go outside so De could be alone for a bit.
Maybe it was just stress? I wondered. No. He would never have reacted like that.
As I made my way back to the house, the ground began to shake beneath my feet.
"What the hell? Can we even have earthquakes in Thomas's mind?"
The ground began to split open nearby, and cracks shot out in every direction.
I screamed in fear and ran back to the house.
"Deceit!" I cried. "Remus! Something's wrong!"
My heartbeat sped up faster and faster as the cracks in the black soil made their way towards me. I had to stay calm. If I got too out of control, it might hurt Thomas, and I could not let that happen.
'You are Thomas's fear, anxiety, paranoia, and all of the dark thoughts in his head. This is your job', a voice echoed across the dark terrain.
"But what if that isn't who I want to be?!" I yelled back. "What if I don't want to be a Dark Side?"
"Virgil," Deceit's voice said from behind me.
I turned around, my heart pounding violently in my chest. "Deceit, I didn't mean—"
"Oh, you made things very clear about how you feel about us," the deceptive trait interrupted.
I was about to speak again when I realized what he had said. "Wait, do you not understand or... Oh my God."
"Now you see," Deceit whispered. "Now, you finally can realize what I meant all along."
I opened my mouth to reply, but the ground opened up below us, sending us tumbling down into a dark pit. The drop was only about ten feet, so it didn't hurt much when we reached the bottom.
I stood up and looked around at where we were.
All I could see was black. Dark, empty, soulless, black. Nothing. There was nothing here but us. The emptiness seemed to go on forever besides a thin silvery veil that formed a barrier all around Deceit and I.
We were trapped.

Three Years Ago
I curled up into a ball and held my hands over my ears. Nothing I did could block out their screams.
"Let us out! Let us out of here!" the other Dark Sides demanded around me.
We had been stuck in this hell hole for twelve years, but they still cried to get out. As if the lighter sides would ever let any of us free.
They put you here because you are useless.
Not even Deceit or Remus care about you.
You are nothing, Virgil.
I felt a hand touch my shoulder, releasing me from my thoughts. I blinked and looked up to see Deceit.
Great. Just who I want to see right now.
"Oh, Virgil. It's so nice to see you. You matter so much to me, you know that right?" He snarled pushing me back onto the cold floor.
"De, I know that you're—"
"Don't call me that!" The man roared, his eyes turning yellow and going into my head.
As much as you want to feel loved, you never will. The person who you want me to be is gone. Give up, Deceit's voice rang through my head.
"Stop!" I whimpered. "Please! Just leave me alone!"
You don't get to tell me what to do. Stop thinking that you're better than us.
"B-But I never said that..."
You shouldn't be here.
I felt Thomas panicking in his room, and his worries only made me feel worse. If Deceit was telling the truth this time, I had nothing else to do but believe the cruel words that he said.
Was I really important to Thomas? All I did was make him feel awful. No part of his personality should ever do that to him.
You're better off dead.
Maybe that voice was right.

Thomas's POV
Maybe that voice was right.
Maybe I shouldn't be here.
Maybe it's time for me to give up.

Virgil's POV
Just as I almost listened to Deceit and the others, a high pitched voice echoed through what we called the Edge of the Mind Space.
"Back away from him now, Deceit!"
I suddenly realized the tears falling down the sides of my face and I hastily wiped them away. Was it another Dark Side that wanted to take their anger out on me? I didn't recognize the voice so maybe it was...
A shorter man wearing a light blue polo and a grey cardigan marched over to us with a frown.
"I said back away, Deceit!" He shouted.
Deceit smirked and slid over to the trait.
"And who are you to decide that?""I'm Patton and you're gonna leave him alone," he shot back. "Come on, kiddo. You gotta come with me."
I blinked in surprise. Did he mean me?
"M-Me?" I stammered.
"Yes you, silly! Let's go! The others are waiting," the man smiled.
Patton grabbed my hand and the two of us walked past Deceit and the rest of the Dark Sides. They all stared in shock as we both crossed the silvery veil that we hadn't been able to cross in twelve years. We then continued for what seemed like hours before we reached a brighter looking version of my home.
"I don't think you told me your name yet," Patton said as we reached a grove of apple trees.
"My name is Virgil. Where are we?"
Patton grinned and gestured around us at the sunny Mind Space. "This? This is your new home!"
