Day 2343

SARAH’S POV

“Mom.” He spoke with his eyes shut. We lay on our backs facing the ceiling, reciting the words we’d repeated so often. Though we’d repeated them more times than I could count they meant nothing. At least not to me. Not anymore. “Mom.” He repeated, awaiting my reply. When I remained silent, he opened his eyes and turned to me. “Sarah didn’t you hear me?” He asked in confusion.

I nodded and closed my eyes. “ I did.” I stated calmly.

            “Why didn’t you answer?”

I swallowed and sat up. “Because I don’t know what to say.” I said bluntly. “And I haven’t for a long time…” I admitted sadly.

Justin sat up and walked over to me on his knees. “What do you mean?” He asked, looking me in the eyes.

“I don’t remember her.” I said, with tears in the back of my eyes. “I mean, I know what I’m supposed to say. I know her hair color and her eye color, but honestly those are just words. “ I began to panic and tears began to break through. I started to ramble until the point that I could hardly speak. “I want to remember them. I really do. B-but every time I try to think of them Daddy appears.” I cried. I tried to wipe away my tears, but it wasn’t working. Finally, Justin got up and wrapped his arms around me. He held me tighter than he ever had before, and he wouldn’t let go.

“Please don’t cry.” He begged, as I burrowed my head into his chest. Even though he was skin and bones, in his arms was my favorite place to be. It always brought comfort and protection. I closed my eyes and the tears began to stop. I just sat there in his arms, loving the sound of his heartbeat.

I wrapped my arms around him too and clutched onto his shirt. “I don’t want to forget them…” I whispered. “What if they forget me? What if they don’t want me back?” I feared, holding him tighter.

His soothing heartbeat quickened and he jolted back, looking me straight in the eyes with a serious expression on his face. “Don’t ever say that again.” He ordered. I looked away sadly. “Please, Sarah.” He begged taking my face in his hands so I was forced to look at him. “You can’t give up. You can’t let him win like that.” I nodded and relaxed as he wrapped his arms around me again. I felt horrible for worrying Justin like I had, but honestly there was nothing I could do… I’d given up.
