George was sitting on his bed staring out the window into the garden. He was trying not to look around at the furniture that was almost exactly the way it had been left. He tried not to break things like he had the first few days. He had told his mum that he'd come out and be with the family, today, but he had no idea how he was going to keep that promise.

There was a knock on the door. He didn't respond but the door opened anyway. George didn't look to see who was coming in the room this time. Probably Ginny or Charlie or Bill. But when the weight of the person settled next to him he knew it couldn't possibly be one of the Weasleys.

"Why are you sad today?" A small voice asks. George sighs quietly and looks over at Teddy Lupin, only five years old and still as perceptive as his mother ever was.

"I lost someone a couple years ago and today was their birthday."

"Oh," Teddy said quietly, "I lost some people too." George looks down at the little boy and his shock of blue hair.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. Uncle Harry says that they died to keep me safe and that they loved me more than anything."

"They did," George murmurs. The little boy places his small hand on the older redhead's freckled one.

"So I'm not sad that they died to keep us all safe," He continues, "I'm just sad that I didn't get to say goodbye."

"My twin," George says, "His name was Fred."

"I know," The blue haired boy says, "I was curious why Grandma Molly always seemed to leave a space open on the mantle during Christmas so I asked and Aunt Ginny told me about him." George laughs for the first time in five years.

"You're an inquisitive little bugger aren't you."

"What's inquisitive? And what's bugger?" Teddy asks, tilting his head slightly. George lets out another watery laugh.

"I'll explain later."

"Good," Teddy leans slightly against George before pulling away and looking up at him startled, "If today's Fred's birthday then it's also your birthday!"

"Yeah, it is," George says, a little confused.

"So why aren't you downstairs eating cake?! Uncle Ron says cake makes everything better!" Teddy sounds incredulous.

"Because I don't want to blow out the candles by myself," George confessed.

"Then I'll help you!" He declares, "And so will Vicky, though I don't know much of a help she'll be since she's only three." George smiles softly.

"I would like that."

"Great!" The little boy cheered, standing up and grabbing George's hand to pull him along. As they started down the last flight of stairs Teddy's hair started to turn the same shade of ginger as George's, matching his freckles and eyes too. "Grandma Molly!" He yelled, "We need a cake and candles stat!"

From that birthday on George never had to blow out the candles by himself, Teddy made sure of it, even when he couldn't be there himself.

I'm sorry... but I had to. Favorite Weasley ship? ~Harper
