We got back to the lair late that evening and got cleaned up, I told Olivia she should get some sleep but she refused.
"Olivia, you need sleep. I know you're tired so just go to bed, I'll watch the news to see if you're a suspect, alright?" I tell her.
"That's not what I'm worried about." She replies.
"What's the matter? you're gonna move in here with me and we'll get some of your stuff in a few days when the heat dies down." I explain, she looks at me with a grumpy face.
"I need to get my brother, I can't leave him behind, I'm not gonna leave him alone for days! He's just a kid!" She says, raising her voice.
"Okay fine, how about if I get your brother for you? After all, out of costume, I'm not a suspect." I suggest, her look softens.
"Okay." She replies. I put on a clean pair of clothes and open the door to leave.
When I get to the house where they live I see a police car outside. Shit. I walk past the house and around the block. When I get to where I think her house is I quickly cut through the yard of the house behind hers and hop the fence, making sure to stay hidden by the house itself. I climb into a window and carefully examine the rooms for her brother, I find him in a small room of toys, laying on a bed, clearly still asleep. He wakes up when I try to pick him up to take him with me.
"Tavis? Where's Olive?" He asks, mispronouncing both our names.
"She's hiding, I'm gonna take you to her, but you need to be quiet so nobody finds us." I tell him, and he grabs a Stuffed animal off the bed before grabbing onto me.
"Shhhhh" I hear him whisper, he's a cute kid. I hold him as I slide down the back side of the house again and carefully climb the fence with him. I take a different route back to make sure the cop out front doesn't spot us. When we get back he runs up to Olivia, who's asleep on the floor.
He wakes her up and they talk for a few minutes about why she's hiding and how he can't say anything to anyone about it. When they finish, she tells him to go play.
"You know, maybe we should just get out of here, after all, I'm on the run now, he probably can't go to school safely, and you never liked to anyways, we could fly away." Olivia suggests, I like that thought.
"Sure thing sweetie." I tell her, and she giggles, it's cute.
"Why do you keep calling me that?" She asks me, I decide it's time to man up and tell her the truth.
"Because, I, well I, I love you." I tell her, she looks up at me and smiles.
"I love you too." She says. She leans in to kiss me and I do the same. I get caught up in the moment and forget to pay attention to anything but her. I didn't see TV playing beside us, I didn't smell the blood on our shoes, and I didn't hear the childish voice asking "what does dis do?" As her lips met mine for a brief second, and then she was gone.
I open my eyes and all that's left of her is a pile of red ash in my hands and on the floor, I stare for a few minutes, feeling the tears fall from my eyes.
"Where'd Olive go? She hidden again?" I hear the young boy tugging at my leg ask. No, I'm angry, all I can think to do, well, I do what I always do when I'm angry. I didn't even think, as I bashed his small skull onto the floor.
