Chapter 6: Everett

I peered up at Everett’s handsome features and felt my stomach flip automatically – his blatant perfection was almost painful to ignore.

“Hi…Everett,” I mumbled and looked around quickly for some sort of escape route.

Okay, if I ran fast enough I could probably make a break for the trees and head south for about three hours before I hit a nearby town. Except, I wouldn’t have any money or supplies…damnit. I couldn’t run fast enough inside and then back out without anyone noticing!

Everett chuckled and patted his horse’s neck, while still gazing down at me.

“Juliet, why do you always look like you’re forming up some master plan whenever I’m talking to you?”

       He noticed?

“Uh…” I couldn’t find the words to reply; what in the world do you say to that? “I’m not,” I spit out, and then mentally kicked myself.

He must think I’m so witty…not.

Everett smiled warmly and extended his hand out to me. I looked at his long fingers and the way his prominent blue veins snaked up his thick wrist. Without thinking of the action, I found myself slipping my hand into his. In one fluid motion, Everett pulled me halfway to my feet. Though, he and I abruptly froze as our fingers entwined completely. A wave of unexplainable electricity shot up my arm, causing the two of us to rip our hands apart; both our faces were etched with a mixture of confusion and astonishment.

I had been so shocked I hardly noticed that I wasn’t steady on my feet and I dipped back, stumbling into the hay bills. Everett’s hands shot out so quickly that I gasped as he rested his huge palms on my shoulder blades. In an effortless motion, he eased my figure back up until we were flush against each other. My arm was tingling; my shoulders were tingling; and now, looking into his gorgeous eyes, my heart even felt zapped.

We stared at each other for a long moment, our breaths coming out in light gasps and our chests only millimeters away from touching with each short exhale. I swallowed hard and peered past Everett for a moment; his gaze was seriously causing my senses to go absolutely wild.

“Everett?” I spoke quietly, attempting to break the building tension.

“Y-yea?” Everett ran his thumb across my bony shoulder mindlessly and I quivered, feeling my face heat up.

“Your…horse,” I pointed towards the galloping animal that was now heading towards the open gate. Everett whistled sharply and let me go gently, before he sped after the steed.

Boy, he looked athletic; with every step, I could clearly see his toned muscles stretching out the fabric of his fitted clothing. I put my hands to my warm cheeks and turned away from him fleetingly. I didn’t know if I wanted to giggle giddily or throw up, maybe both. I hated these feelings!
