Chapter 11: Truth
Everett Tucker
I ran my fingers through my hair, finding myself feeling unmanageably nervous and worrisome. With wild haste, I paced outside of my bedroom door.
It is rarity for humans and wolves to mate and so, I hardly knew the repercussions I’d face once claiming Juliet. She said I didn’t hurt her, but she had practically collapsed in my arms minutes later! I rubbed my hands across my face; I was completely driving myself insane.
Juliet, the woman I loved, was in my bed right now being overlooked by our pack doctor because of something I’d done. I couldn’t handle the guilt swirling through my chest and so I sunk against the wall, allowing for my head to hang limply between my shoulders. I knew Alphas should never show weakness but right now, I did not care for my reputation. I only cared for her.
I sighed and yanked off the constricting tie pressed to my neck. I realized that I’d been holding my wolf back for far too long, but was it really necessary for me to lose control in such an outrageous way?
This was not how tonight was supposed to happen! I dropped my head into my hands as I heard the soft clock of my bedroom door opening.
“Everett?” The pack doctor, named James, peered down at me with a curious expression; I sighed heavily and attempted to collect myself.
“Is she alright?” I asked uneasily as I stood up quickly, anxious to see Juliet. James smiled sympathetically and nodded as he zipped up his first-aid bag.
“Don’t worry Everett, Juliet will be fine. She was overwhelmed and her mind needed to find a way to protect itself. She fainted, that is all.” James gestured toward the door before rummaging into his coat pocket.
“So I didn’t hurt her, the wound wasn’t too deep?” I asked nervously; may the gods forbid I punctured an artery. James only chucked and handed me a bottle filled with blue capsules.
“You didn’t hurt her in the slightest; her reaction was completely natural. We discussed this before, you remember? Human bodies aren’t as strong as werewolves. Therefore, they cope with the mating process a little differently. Nonetheless, it’s nothing to particularly worry about. However, if she’s still woozy when she wakes up, you can give her one of those.” James stated simply as he tapped on the bottle in my hand.
I felt my shoulders straighten as I heard Juliet restlessly toss in the room; could she be awake already?
“Ah, Everett, I’d really like to discuss something with you regarding Juliet’s blood test…” I’d hardly heard James as I listened intensely to the rustling in my bedroom; my wolf was practically growling at me to go to his mate.
“Sure, can it just wait until morning, James? I’ll come meet with you as soon as Michael leaves.” I patted his shoulder, completely distracted now, and walked past him and into my room quietly.
