Chapter 15: Counter Attack
The minute midnight rolled around, I flipped out of bed, fully dressed in my head-to-toe black fighting gear. This was it; I’d have once chance to counter Alpha Michael’s attack and save the Eastern Pack before tomorrow night rolled around.
Taking a deep breath, I grabbed the wooden chair from the corner of my room and proceeded to quietly set it up under the door handle. I knew the effort would be pointless if someone like Claus really wanted to get in, but at least it’d give me a few extra minutes of delay.
Taking one last look back towards my bedroom door, I quickly slid over to the window and snapped its rusted locks. Either Alpha Michael was stupid to think that I wouldn’t try something, or he thinks I’m stupid for even considering it. I am not a fool; I know what repercussions I’ll face if I succeed in carrying out this plan.
Pushing the window out slowly, I then gripped the ledge and slid my body down to hang against the brick wall.
If you think that this is my first time sneaking in or out of somewhere, then need I remind you of exactly who I was raised to be?
I chewed my lip as I gazed down at the second story drop. I knew I could make it… I just didn’t want to break a leg in doing so. Gathering up my courage, I decided to take the chance as I plunged toward the grass. Rolling the moment I hit solid ground, I quickly jumped up and rubbed my tingling thighs.
Thank you… I graciously looked up toward the twinkling sky.
Now, it was time to run. Looking sharply over my shoulder to the quiet town square, I then flung myself into the forest alike a fleeting bat escaping the sun. I’d never run faster in my life as I sped feverishly north.
I’d mulled over all of my possible escape options as soon as Claus left me alone in the afternoon. I knew there was only one plausible option if I was going to help Everett. On one hand, I couldn’t go to him because he’d never allow me to protect him and two, I knew only two people who’d be willing to help me.
Soaring over a few fallen logs, I pushed myself further toward what I hoped was the right direction.
It took me six hours of full-out sprinting to reach the Northern Pack territory.
I held myself back from getting too nervous as I realized a few wolves began to chase me after I passed the boarder. This was a precaution, I knew. Still, nonetheless, my rogue instincts were screaming at me to find the nearest tree or hurtle myself in the opposite direction.
I decided to force down my unease as I raced closer into the territory. I knew I had neared the heart of the pack when the wolves began growling dangerously beside me, pushing their boundaries in closer to box me in.
Feeling utterly breathless and wracked with anxiety, I decided to slow and raise my arms in surrender. I knew exactly where these guarding wolves would bring me.
